In two experimental studies, the influence of question-based reflection on the quality of design ... more In two experimental studies, the influence of question-based reflection on the quality of design solutions was investigated. Students and experts with different know-how and professional experience had to design an artefact that should meet a list of requirements. Subsequently, they were asked to answer a system of interrogative questions stimulating reflection on the solutions with the opportunity to modify or revise them. These questions cause the participants to explain, justify and evaluate their finished design and, hence, aiming at the semantic relations in systems. In all groups significant improvements of the solutions were obtained whereby the improvements of engineers with a lower work-experience (job beginners) were significantly higher as those with higher experience. The integration of a specific type of questioning behaviour in the design education is discussed.

Open environments for Internet access such as publicly used Internet café’s and university/school laboratories are becoming a platform for Criminals and newbie Crackers. The major reason behind this is lack of proper authentication, insufficient logging & usage monitoring system in these environments. We propose Internet Usage Monitoring for Crime Detection (IUMCD) system for detection and prevention of criminal activities and intrusion attempts happening from such open environments. The IUMCD is a proactive system which monitors all User activities when User is accessing Internet from an open environment. We observed that IUMCD system is able to detect and report many different types of Criminal activities and Intrusion attempts while maintaining User’s private information inaccessible to others.

A student-centred approach to teaching has been conceptualized as a key driver in higher educatio... more A student-centred approach to teaching has been conceptualized as a key driver in higher education to facilitate understanding of concepts and improve attainment. The occurrence of student study team behaviours is diagnostic of this approach to teaching. However, the extent to which team behaviours are performed outside the parameters of formal teacher-learner environments remains under-researched. This is problematic as it is unclear whether study teams are maintained outside the confines of lectures, and the extent to which they impact on individual student grades. A naturalistic observational study was carried out that utilized short message text service communication as a means to record the frequency of team behaviours within informal environments. The findings suggest the frequency of team behaviours: 1) were positively associated with student grades; 2) increased after lectures independently rated as low in employing a student-centred focus; and 3) were facilitated by students' trait emotional intelligence.
Metacognition refers to an individual's knowledge, control and awareness of his/her learning proc... more Metacognition refers to an individual's knowledge, control and awareness of his/her learning processes. An important goal of education is to develop students as metacognitive, life-long learners. However, developing students' metacognition and evaluating whether classrooms are oriented to the development of students' metacognition are difficult and often time-consuming tasks. Further, no instruments that measure key dimensions related to classroom factors that specifically influence the development of students' metacognition have been available. This article describes the conceptualisation, design, and validation of an instrument for evaluating the metacognitive orientation of science classroom learning environments. The metacognitive orientation of a learning environment is the extent to which that environment supports the development and enhancement of students' metacognition. Social constructivism was the guiding referent informing the instrument's orientation and development. This instrument measures students' perceptions of the extent to which certain psychosocial dimensions, evident in learning environments where interventions have resulted in enhanced student metacognition, are evident in their science classrooms. Findings from the use of this instrument complement what is already known from research studies to be generally the case in relation to science classrooms' metacognitive orientation.
