Through 9 weeks of participant observation and informal interviews with a group of 22 overland travellers this thesis answers the question of how the structures and practices of overlanding lead to interdependency relations amongst the travellers and the environment they travel through. The thesis will endeavour to understand how these interdependency relations act together to form the spaces that are created in this kind of tourism and how these spaces then dictate zones of inclusion and exclusion. I argue that interdependency practices and relationships are responsible for the structures and framing of the overland space, amongst not only the travellers but also the local environments and people. These practices and relationships are interdependent not only within themselves but also on each other in the creation and functioning of the whole overland experience. This is set against a backdrop of authenticity and postcolonialism which pervade all aspects of global tourism. The discourse of ‘insider’ and ‘outsider’ contextualizes these relationships and leads to the creation of new preconceptions and expectations of place that affect the travellers and their experiences from the past, through the present and into the future.
