However, in mythical as well as ancient stories, one can find traces of the familiarity of ancient people with medicine and treatment. However, after the emergence of Islam (6 A.D.), numerous textbooks on the pharmacy science (pharmaceutical science) are available. These texts, along with other historical and literary texts, encompass traces testifying the existence of such traditional pharmacies. Such pharmacies were in practice till mid-19th century when the first medical school was launched. At this time, mainly due to the familiarity of Naseredin Shah, (the King), with medical improvement in Europe, the first modern medical school was established in Iran. A French doctor, Dr. Focckette, as the first pharmacy teacher, started working in this school. This was followed by the effort made by Albert Schev...

This study tried to investigate how the form-focused instruction affects lower-intermediate EFL Iranian learners’ grammar learning. Based on an experimental data collection and analysis, the design of the study was a pre-test and post-test which dealt with 45 female participants at the pre-intermediate level. The pre-test was administered at the beginning of the course; then, the researchers observed two groups-- experimental (FFI) and control groups (traditional method). The researchers used an observation checklist which contained some items to investigate if the teacher used the related items in classes. Afterwards, the researchers provided the frequency of observation of teachers’ operations which showed differences between the FFI and the traditional instruction. After observing the teaching sessions,...

The current study analyzed cultural content of three mainstream intermediate level EFL textbooks. This study was carried out using Chen’s (2004) and Lee’s (2009) suggested themes for detecting big “C” and little “c” culture aspects. Big C represents series of statistics and facts such as art, geography, history, education, festivals, and customs of the target speech community; small c represents norms, beliefs, sociocultural variables such as age, sex, and social position (Lee, 2009). This study also analyzed the cultural categories including target culture, source culture and international culture based on Cortazzi and Jin’s (1999) category and another category i.e. neutral culture based on Aliakbari’s (2004) category. This was a qualitative-quantitative study and chisquare test was applied in it. It was found that generally both little “c” and b...

Grammatically, they are formed differently. That is to say, while some are simple nouns, others are a combination of prefix/suffix and a noun and some others that of an adjective and a noun. There are still others which are adjectives by nature but functionally are used to name an individual. Due to the semantic as well as syntactic diversity noticed in the formation of proper name, the present study has primarily taken a descriptive approach and has studied Persian proper names to find out what grammatical categories contribute to the proper name construction; furthermore, certain combinations mark the gender of its beholder. Then, the researchers have traced the possible semantic connotation assigned to each gender.

Cultural content and developing learners’ intercultural competence has become an important issue ... more Cultural content and developing learners’ intercultural competence has become an important issue after the advent of intercultural communicative approach (ICC) in language teaching field. Therefore, the cultural content of EFL textbooks as learners’ main source for language learning is an important issue for investigation. The current study analyzed cultural content of three mainstream intermediate level EFL textbooks, namely Top Notch (volume 2), American English Files (volume 3) and Four Corners (Volume 2). This study analyzed the cultural categories which included target culture, source culture and international culture based on Coratzzi and Jin’s (1999) categorization as well as the category introduced by Aliakbari (2004), culture free to complement these three. This was a quantitative study. The quantitative data focused on an account of the amount (percentage and frequency) of the cultural content treatment in the textbooks. To find out if the difference between cultural categories was statistically significant or not, chi-square test was applied. The result of the study showed statistically no significant difference among the three books in terms of their cultural categories.
