What’s new in Apple Watch and watchOS 11
Introducing Apple Watch Series 10
The latest Apple Watch features the biggest and most advanced display yet. It’s the thinnest Apple Watch ever—10% thinner than Series 9—and significantly lighter. Phone calls sound better in loud environments, and you can play media through the built-in speaker. A powerful new health feature—Sleep Apnea Notifications—helps you track breathing disturbances while you sleep. And a new depth gauge and a water temperature sensor make it even more capable in water. See Choose an audio destination, Receive sleep apnea notifications, and Measure underwater temperature, duration, and depth.
Health and wellness
Check in on your daily health status. With the new Vitals app, you can see your key health metrics collected during sleep—heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, sleep duration, and blood oxygen. If multiple metrics fall outside your typical range, you receive a notification along with context for factors that may be involved. See Track your vitals.
Note: Blood Oxygen app measurements are not intended for medical use. The ability to measure blood oxygen is no longer available on Apple Watch units sold by Apple in the United States on or after January 18, 2024. These units are indicated with part numbers ending in LW/A. Learn how to identify your Apple Watch.
Cycle Tracking for a pregnancy. When you add a pregnancy in the Health app on iPhone or iPad, Cycle Tracking displays your gestational age and shows pregnant days in the Cycle Tracking app. See Track your pregnancy.
Sleep Apnea Notifications. Apple Watch can track breathing disturbances during sleep and notify you when it detects signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea (supported on Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2). See Receive sleep apnea notifications.
Activity and fitness
Custom workouts and pool swims. Your Apple Watch can automatically guide you through timed intervals of work and recovery in the pool, with haptics that tell you when it’s time to move to the next interval. The Up Next workout view for any Custom Workout shows what’s remaining in your current interval and what’s coming next. See Create a custom workout.
Track your effort. After completing most cardio-focused workouts in the Workout app, you can review a new effort metric in the summary, estimating how hard you exercised. Your heart rate, VO2 max, and personal data like age, height, and weight are factored into each rating. See End and review your workout.
Measure the intensity of your workouts. In the Activity app, you can review your training load—a measure of the intensity and duration of your workouts. See its impact on your body over time, and make informed decisions about how and when to adjust your workouts, especially when you’re training for a big event. See Track your training load.
Adjust your Activity rings. You can customize your Activity ring goals by the day of the week. And if you need to take a break, pause your rings for a day, week, month, or more and keep your award streak going. See Adjust your Activity ring goals.
Outdoors
Hit the trail. With hiking and walking routes in Maps, you can create custom routes and get routes for all U.S. national parks. Save them to your watch to use offline and get turn‑by‑turn voice guidance when your iPhone isn’t with you or is powered down. See Use offline maps.
Enhanced GPS positioning. Apple Watch can now track changes in your direction more precisely—like when you’re playing football—and provide distance and route maps for more workouts. See Calibrate your Apple Watch.
See upcoming tides. Tides helps you plan and enjoy ocean beach activities and stay informed of changing tidal conditions over a 7-day period. See Use Tides.
Watch faces and personalization
Explore new watch faces. Switch things up with new watch faces for Apple Watch. Flux brings bold numerals and colors to your watch, Reflections reimagines the interaction of light and a metallic surface in a digital form, and Pride Radiance is inspired by the rainbow flag. See Apple Watch faces and their features.
A redesigned Photos watch face. Powered by machine learning, the redesigned Photos watch face can search thousands of photos in your library, intelligently analyze them, and select the best compositions, framing, and image quality for your watch. You can select specific people, pets, nature scenes, or cities. Customize the time, layout, font, and colors. See Photos.
Add a Depth complication to your watch face. During water activities like snorkeling, you can see important information such as current depth, water temperature, and time underwater. See Add complications to the watch face.
See the latest with Smart Stack and Live Activities. Widgets are automatically added to the Smart Stack based on the time, date, location, and more. Live Activities from your iPhone also appear in the Smart Stack. There are new widgets like severe weather alerts, training load, Photos, Distance, and Music Recognition. You can quickly access three items you used most recently in an app—like your most recent workouts or songs you’ve played. See timely widgets in the Smart Stack.
Convenience and connection
Use Apple Watch with one hand. With the double tap gesture, you can now scroll through supported apps such as Weather. In supported third-party apps, you can use double tap for quick actions such as moving to the next step of a recipe. See Use double tap to perform common actions.
Choose new actions for the Action button. On Apple Watch Ultra models, you can set the Action button to perform new functions, such as opening the Translate app, starting a new voice memo, and more. And with Quick Switch, you can simply press and hold the Action button to choose a different function. See Customize the Action button.
Check In. Automatically notify a friend or loved one when you’ve arrived at a destination. Start a Check In from Messages by entering your destination or arrival time. Or start a Check In from the Workout app. (Requires iOS 17 or later for the recipient. Location sharing isn’t available in some countries and regions due to local laws.) See Use Check In to let friends know you’ve arrived.
Translate languages on your wrist. The Translate app comes to Apple Watch with support for 20 languages. See a translation simply by typing or dictating a phrase. Play the translation out loud, and slow it down if needed. When you travel to a location with a language that’s different from your Apple Watch, Translate can also show up as a suggested widget in the Smart Stack. If you download a language, you can even use Translate offline. See Translate text and voice.
And more
Unlock your door as you approach. With Ultra Wideband home keys, you can unlock your door without holding your watch near the lock. See Unlock your home.
Enhanced ticketing. See more information on tickets in your Wallet, like directions to the parking lot, show times, and more. Events also appear as Live Activities in your Smart Stack. See Add and use passes in Wallet.
Send Apple Cash with a tap. With Tap to Cash, you can send Apple Cash to someone by holding your iPhone or Apple Watch near their iPhone or Apple Watch, without having to share your phone number or email address. See Send Apple Cash by bringing devices together with Tap to Cash.
