The epidemiological researches, that are carried out on human populations, constitute the study model which can provide definitive evidence on the considered association. Among the several cancer sites, cancer of the lung, oral cavity and pharynx, esophagus, larynx, pancreas and urinary bladder are the sites more directly related with smoking habits. In this research the relationship between these cancer sites and tobacco smoking was studied examining both the international literature, and applying the cohort analysis to Italian mortality data from 1950 to 1983. The birth cohorts considered were those from 1875 to 1935 and data on cancer deaths are derived from official ISTAT publications. The analysis of cohort variation was carried out utilizing the indirect standardization method. The data on tobacco consumption, from 1900 to 1985, was obtain...

Our findings demonstrate the causal asymmetry between successful and unsuccessful digitization of inter-organizational information flows. While unsuccessful digitization requires poor project management skills, successful digitization is much more demanding because it also requires compatible technologies which are implemented either by means of a small-scale, bottom-up approach to standardization or a single, centralised architecture developed in a top-down fashion. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed by highlighting the key role of coordination by feedback in a context of increasing digitization of criminal justice systems.

While the recent practice-turn to routines studies has turned a blind-eye to the notion of generative systems, this paper endeavours to use critical realist tenets to shed a new light on the notion of generative systems. By analyzing the emergence of Duty Prosecutors as an instance of routinization in the making, the paper deploys critical realist case study principles that unpack the underlying structural mechanisms in a counterfactual fashion. Theoretical implications are discussed by highlighting that the structural nexus of position-practice relations is constitutive and, therefore, generative of patterns in variety

Although published a few years ago, Raymond's seminal work has been highly influential in considering this emergent phenomenon as a gift economy where gift exchange represents the means whereby anonymous contributors start community building. This study attempts to challenge this logic by (re-)exploring the mechanisms responsible for the existence of the open-source model. The research objective of this paper is threefold: firstly, it aims to challenge the gift-economy metaphor; secondly, and perhaps more ambitiously, the paper develops a new theoretical foundation underlying the open-source phenomenon whereby the open-source movement is considered as the outcome of a conveyance of informative, valuative and incitive signals. Lastly, the paper stresses the relevance of the social ove...

Though unplanned, the latter approach may lead to mistakes that are more correctable than the large mistakes stemming from top-down, deliberate planning. The study is an analysis of context-mechanism-outcome configurations of inter-organizational information sharing activities within criminal justice systems and demonstrates the causal asymmetry between positive and negative cases. Theoretical, methodological, and practical implications are discussed by highlighting the causal role of different types of governance structure in a crisp-set configurational fashion.

Yet, it has the potential of reframing IS research because it can shed a new light on the study of causal mechanisms. In this paper, we call for a renewed effort in the use of retroduction in the study of IS phenomena. Specifically, we claim that IS researchers could retroduce causal mechanisms by leveraging Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) counterfactual approach to causation. Preliminary insights are discussed.

While unsuccessful information sharing requires poor project management, successful information sharing also requires compatible technologies which are implemented either by means of a small-scale, bottom-up approach to standardization or a top-down, centralised architecture. By triggering the radical restructuring of information-sharing workflows, good project management and compatible technologies set in motion underlying mechanisms that generate successful inter-organisational information sharing. Implications are discussed by highlighting the role of coordination by technological feedback in a context of increasing digitization.
