It aims to throw useful light on the relationship between laws on lending and credit on the one hand, and actual commercial practices, on the other; and to present a number of hypotheses regarding the following questions: How ‘Islamic’ is Islamic banking today? Is its modus operandi interest free or interest based? Does it offer a viable alternative to banking capitalism or is it merely a variant of conventional banking?
