Nowadays, in 2019, most European countries have a national populist party either already in government or seeking to enter into government. This paper will analyse the reasons for its emergence today. It will argue that both cultural and economic reasons have contributed to creating the conditions from which populism, as a political movement, could potentially develop and even enter into government. However, the conditions alone are not enough. The emergence of a charismatic leader, adept at populist rhetoric and using social media, gives a voice to the feelings of the people, ultimately creating a political movement and normalising far-wing ideas.
The aim of this thesis was to explore how Estonian music industry professionals make sense of and... more The aim of this thesis was to explore how Estonian music industry professionals make sense of and use streaming platforms, particularly Spotify, in their day-to-day work. The thesis examines how they understand and use Spotify playlists, data and algorithms, as well as how streaming platforms relate to other business activities. Eight music professionals were interviewed and these interviews were subjected to qualitative thematic analysis.
The results of the study were analyzed through the prism of various theories, concepts and ideas including platformization, affordances, platform gatekeeping, (in)visibility, data-literacy, and algorithmic imaginaries. The main findings showcased how Estonian music industry professionals use Spotify data for three main purposes, and how Spotify playlists were seen as an important way to gain exposure. Throughout the study, it became evident that there were some structural issues that Estonian music professionals faced on the platform limiting the region's competitiveness in the form of visibility through recommendation algorithms and platform gatekeepers through the lack of regional playlist editors.
