Rebecca Hankins is a Professor and a certified archivist/librarian. She received her terminal graduate degree from Louisiana State University in 2000. She has been at Texas A&M University since 2003, receiving tenure in 2010. and promotion to Full in 2019. Her previous employment included 12 years as senior archivist at The Amistad Research Center at Tulane University in New Orleans, the premier research repository on Africana historical documentation. She teaches courses on the use of primary sources in research and research methodology. She has presented at numerous conference venues and published in science fiction, library, archival, and other peer-reviewed journals. Her areas of expertise include building collections and scholarly resources for the study of the African Diaspora, Women & Gender Studies, and Arabic Language and Culture. She co-authored with scholar Dr. Miguel Juarez the book titled “Where are All the Librarians of Color: The Experiences of People of Color in Academia” published by Library Juice Press, 2016.
This article discusses how theory and historical analysis can help inform managerial practices to... more This article discusses how theory and historical analysis can help inform managerial practices toward the integration of MARC AMC as part of a descriptive chain. The staff of the Amistad Research Center used their own experiences and research and Zipf's Law of Least Effort to produce techniques to simplify and rationalize the complex, library-based MARC format for their environment and ongoing technological change. The process is ongoing and far from revolutionary, but the techniques to date include the production of a standard cataloging worksheet and an authority list of subject headings.

This essay discusses a number of identity issues related to what people of color experience in Am... more This essay discusses a number of identity issues related to what people of color experience in American society, with a particular focus on Derrick Bell's concept of racial realism. Although this concept could be considered very pessimistic, the paper discusses how it really permits people of color the freedom to work from a platform of self-empowerment.
