This study aimed to document the acceptability and compliance of the breast cancer prevention campaigns. Materials & methods: Healthy women aged 35–65 years were recruited from various regions of the Northwest of Iran. All women were invited to participate in self-examination training for the breast and then re-assessed by clinical examination and mammography. Results: A total of 321 healthy women were recruited, and volunteered to undergo at least one breast self-examination. The first and second clinical examinations were conducted on all women. Ultimately, 272 women (84.7%) underwent mammography. The most common barriers to screening were found to be fear of positive results, fear of cancer, lack of knowledge, fear of the mammography procedure and pain, travel distance and costs. Conclusion: The most critical challenge for implementing a breast cancer prevention program was the lack of knowledge and...

Currently, CRC is the fourth most common cancer in men and the second common cancer in women of all ages in Iran. The aim of this study was to determine the epidemiologic profile of CRC along with CRC specific survival analysis. MethodsThis was an analytical cross-sectional study using the East Azerbaijan Population Based Cancer Registry database (EA-PBCR) as a source for data related to patients with a diagnosis of CRC. Colorectal cancer specific 1- to 5-year survival analysis and mortality rates were calculated. Log-rank test and Cox regression analysis was performed to test the equality of survival function and mortality hazard. ResultsA total of 2,366 newly diagnosed CRCs were registered during 3 years, with a male: female ratio of 1.31. Overall survival rate was 49.8%. One- to 5-year survival rates were 96.21%, 56.94%, 48.62%, 47.88% and 46.76% respe...

Chemotherapy is usually not indicated in early and stable disease and using Chlorambucil with or without steroids has been the drug of choice in the treatment of CLL for many years . Clinical studies have shown that using Fludarabin can cause a complete response in significant number of untreated and/or previously treated CLL patients. The aim of this study is evaluating of CLL patients and determining the effects of treatment with Fludarabin. A retrospective (descriptive/cross sectional) study of CLL patients who admitted to Hematology and Oncology Research Center of Tabriz university of Medical Sciences, between 1995-2005 was made and 126 patients enrolled. Collection of data was carried out according to special questionnaire and response to Fludarabin was analyzed by SPSS 11 software. The patients mean age of diagnosis ...

The link between high risk types of HPV and some anogenital and aerodigestive tract cancer is well established. Oral HPV infection plays a role in developing oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. We studied the prevalence of oral HPV in healthy individuals and its relative risk factors. Methods: Saliva samples of 114 healthy subjects were collected for HPV DNA analysis. Volunteers completed questionnaires and signed a written consent. For data analysis descriptive statistic, chi square test and odds ratio was used. Results: The frequency of oral HPV in healthy individuals was 6.1 %(seven participant). The most frequent type was HPV-18 in five of them. HPV-6 and HPV-66 each was detected in one case. Relation of oral HPV positivity to demographic features and risk factors was not statistically significant. Conclusions: The prevalence of oral HPV infection in our community is the ...

However, infectious complications limit its positive outcomes. Therefore, better identification of related factors to the occurrence of febrile neutropenia may lead to improved management of these patients. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and associated factors with the occurrence of febrile neutropenia in following BMT in patients with lymphoma Method: In this prospective study, 45 patients with a definite diagnosis of lymphoma who were candidates for BMT were consecutively included. Demographic characteristics, lymphoma type, and medical history, as well as the results of selected laboratory tests, were recorded. After BMT, neutrophil count and body temperature were evaluated. Results: Febrile neutropenia occurred in 28 patients (62.5 %). No statistically significant difference was seen between those with febrile neutropenia and ...

Materials and Methods: This study was performed as a cross-sectional analytical research study, during the 2017 Sep-2018 June academic year, in randomly selected high-schools. Questionnaire was designed and implemented which included socio-demographic information and 65 questions with three answers from disagree, agree, completely agree, and each answer was given from 1 to 3 marks. This study aimed to model the factors associated with mortality in patients with BC utilizing the machine learning approach. Methods: We used data of patients with primary BC during 2007-2016 in Tabriz, Iran. The data were analyzed using decision tree (DT), boosted tree (BT), random forest (RF), k-nearest neighbors (KNN) and generalized additive model (GAM) with inverse probability of censoring weighting (IPCW) technique to assess the risk factors of mortality. The models were compared by using diagnostic accuracy measures. Results: Accuracy of the models ranged from 76.0 to 93.0%, with sensitivity of 82.5-98.8% and specificity of 72.2-99.4%. The GAM fit the data best with accuracy of 93.0% (95% CI: [90.5, 95.0]), sensitivity of 98.8% (95% CI: [96.9, 99.7]) and specificity of 84.3% (95% CI: [78.8, 88.9]) where non-linear effect of age (p-value = ...

Thalassemia is a costly disease. We aimed to examine the economic burden of thalassemia treatment in Iran. Methods: All thalassemic patients, registered at two hematology clinics of Tabriz in 2009 were invited to the study. Those who consented (100 patients) completed a simple questionnaire. Results: The total cost of treating thalassemia was €1,730.52 per patient/year. Total annual direct cost was €146,621.49 and indirect cost was €26430.22 for 100 patients. Blood transfusion and nursing charges were the most costly expenditures. It is estimated that up to €26 million/year is spent for treatment of all registered thalassemic patients in Iran. Conclusion: This study showed that a large amount of money is paid for thalassemia treatment by the government and patients. When the income of an average Iranian is considered, the magnitude of problem emerges.

We aimed to evaluate the clinicopathologic significance of EZH2 in patients with breast cancer. Methods This was an analytical descriptive study of surgical specimens of primary breast tumors. Specimens were analyzed immunohistochemically for EZH2, estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, Ki-67, P53, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) expressions. Regression analysis was performed to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs. Kaplan–Meier and Cox regression models were used to estimate the overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Results We included 100 patients with breast cancer (mean age 51.05±9.54 years). The multivariate regression analysis showed that HER2-positive patients had approximately twice the levels of EZH2 expression compared with HER2-negative patients (HR 2.16, 95% CI 0.48–11.49)...

Precise relationships with specific genetic mutations that could alter signaling pathways involved in colorectal cancer remain unknown. We therefore aimed to investigate possible links between lifestyle, dietary habits, and socioeconomic factors and specific mutations that are common in colorectal cancers. Methods: Data were retrieved from a baseline survey of lifestyle factors, dietary behavior, and SES, as well as anthropometric evaluations during a physical examination, for 100 confirmed primary sporadic colorectal cancer patients from Northwest Iran. Results: High socioeconomic status was significantly associated with higher likelihood of a KRAS gene mutation (P < 0.05) (odds ratio: 3.01; 95% CI: 0.69–13.02). Consuming carbohydrates and alcohol, working less,...

Of them, osteosarcoma is the rarest. Osteosarcoma of the larynx may be a difficult clinical diagnosis. Pathologic confirmation of osteoid is required for the diagnosis. Treatment is primarily surgical. It is believed that aggressive surgical intervention directed at complete tumor extirpation is the treatment of choice. Outcomes of such patients are generally poor. Most patients die because of pulmonary metastasis. A case is reported here and a review of all available published cases of osteosarcoma of the larynx is presented.
