It does so by exploring the social aspects of the Jewish burial and mourning rituals, such as: funerals, Shiva (a seven days mourning period), commemoration, bereaved families and more, first in the Jewish communities of Warsaw and Lodz during the pre-Holocaust era, and then during the Holocaust itself. Its basic assumption sees these rituals as a 'window' to the inner world of a society, especially in times of a formidable crisis related to death, as in the case of the Holocaust. From what it shows, we can conclude of how these two specific Jewish societies dealt with the growing daily presence of death in the Ghettos, and consequently with the equally increasing loss. Thus its contents and more importantly conclusions can also be used as a new and relevant way for examining the Jewish daily way of life in the Ghettos, during the Holocaust.
