In the late 1990s, I began presenting conference papers that explored a postcolonial ecocriticism of South African literature, one alert to how, during the transition to democracy, the local environmental culture began to shift focus from conservation to issues of environmental justice. From these papers, I have been publishing articles that explore widely how literary interpretation might attend to the nature-human relation in all its complexity - in African countries but also more broadly, wherever modernity touches. I am especially concerned with the interconnections of literary history, environmental justice, ecology, and the postcolonial condition. Recent work links these topics with the planetary and the global–and, in relation to both, climate change.

One point of difficulty lies in how these two forms of criticism develop differing evaluations of discourse and its relation to what counts as real.
