Jonathan Owen Clark
I have research interests in: aesthetics and critical theory; philosophy of history and historiography; performance studies; critical pedagogy and the philosophy of education. I am currently Professor of Aesthetics and Arts Practice; Head of Research and Postgraduate Research Programmes at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, London. I worked previously at Brunel University and at the International Centre for Music Studies, University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. I am currently also a doctoral supervisor at the Centre for Cultural Studies, Goldsmiths, University of London.
My current research concerns the following:
- the relation between art, artefact and material culture and the concepts of historicity, historical experience, aura and presence;
- specific analyses of visual art and performance arts, often using ideas from critical theory, systems theory and phenomenology;
- the question of what constitutes a suitable ‘aesthetic education'.
I am also an active artist, specializing in collaborative projects in sound art, installation and choreography. My work (see artist CV) as been shown, either in solo or group projects, at venues including: BALTIC Gateshead; Southbank Centre; Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; Royal Opera House, Clore Studio; Royal College of Art, Gulbenkian Gallery.
Other groups in which I am active include the Royal Musical Association Music and Philosophy Study Group and the Society for European Philosophy (Executive Committee, 17-18).
