Oscar Nominations: Emilia Pérez, The Brutalist and Wicked Lead 2025 List
Nominees for the 97th Academy Awards were announced Thursday morning, and musical crime drama Emilia Pérez led the pack with 13 nominations.
In addition to a nod for Best Picture, the film picked up nominations for lead actress Karla Sofía Gascón, supporting actress Zoe Saldaña and director Jacques Audiard. Selena Gomez, however — previously nominated for a Golden Globe for Emilia Pérez — did not get a nod from the Academy.
Period drama The Brutalist and musical adaptation Wicked also racked up quite a few nominations on Thursday, coming away with 10 each.
The 97th Oscars, hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien for the first time, will air live Sunday, March 2, at 7/6c on ABC. Scroll down to review the complete nominations list, then weigh in below with your reactions.

Emilia Perez is a bit overrated if you ask me.
Jamie Lee Curtis/The Last Showgirl was robbed
Wicked is very overrated, if you ask me. It was only half a movie! How on earth can a movie with no conclusion be nominated for Best Picture? Why are munchkins gleeful about a dead witch who never dies at the end and merely just becomes a witch with no actions showing why they hate her so much? Yes, I know that will be in Part 2, but that’s my point. It’s not a complete movie and doesn’t conclude anything.
I feel ever since they expanded that category to 10, there have just been a bunch of movies getting that nom that truly don’t deserve it.
I feel like I’m missing something about Wicked. I enjoyed it, solid 7.5-8/10 movie with good singing and good acting but for A LOT of people it seems to be this cultural milestone that’s shaken the cinema zeitgeist.
I feel the same way. Entertaining for sure. But I wasn’t blown away by it or by any of the songs THAT much. Idk, maybe because I was never a theater kid or something.
Tell that to The Lord of the Rings trilogy. All three films were nominated for best picture.
And then they had overkill as don’t get me wrong return of the king was good but shouildn ‘t have won in every category but that was a make up for the fact that the first two went o fer
Yeah, but they were based on three different books, so it made sense to make three movies. Wicked the movie has the same running time as the Broadway show but needed two movies? Makes no sense.
Dude, you are missing the point of the argument. Ann’s incredibly stupid argument is that Wicked shouldn’t get any noms because it lacks a conclusion. When 2/3 Lord of the Rings movies also lack a conclusion, because they are NOT supposed to have a conclusion! All 3 movies (and books) are the beginning, middle, and, ending of ONE story.
.
Also, as someone who thought the Broadway show was way too rushed, splitting it into two movies makes perfect sense.
Dune Part 1 was nominated, now here is the 2nd one being nominated. Why are you not raging on them in comparison. You could argue the same for the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, wasn’t completed till the last film, but still received Best Picture nominations for all 3 films.
I haven’t seen Dune, so I can’t say anything in regards to that. But if there narrative of the film has a beginning, middle, and end, then it is complete, even if the overaching plot, the saga, continues. The narrative to Wicked begins with the witch dead and everyone celebrating. It then presents the story as a flashback. But the flashback never ends. So, as a Part 1 movie, it stinks because the narrative, which is told as a flashback, does not conclude. That’s the issue. If the writers and director weren’t lazy, they would have re-plotted the story so that it simply goes in chronological order to show the beginning of the Wicked Witch from birth to how she was misunderstood to be wicked, not simply just retell Act I of the stage version exactly as it was presented, as a flashback. If Wicked: Part 1 had been told in chronological order, there would have been a distinct beginning, middle, and end to the narrative. Then in Part 2, the movie could then begin with No One Mourns the Wicked and then flashback to show the “horrors” of why she was so wicked with the flashback ending and showing the present-day story. Then both parts would have had a satisfying beginning, middle, and end. Instead we got an incomplete Part 1 and we don’t know what they’re doing for Part 2 yet.
clearly you never seen the play.
So NOW you are arguing that movies are not allowed to be told out of order?!?! Did you even read your own post?
So by this “logic” does that mean other movies without conclusions like Lord of the Rings or Dune shouldn’t have been nominated? Just an incredibly dumb argument. Speaking of dumb arguments…
.
“…Why are munchkins gleeful about a dead witch…”
This is answered in the movie! Do you have to be spoon feed everything?!?! The movie ends with Morrible launching a hate campaign against her accusing her of attacking the wizard (who they practically worship) and stealing the grimoire. Which the munchkins believed because the munchkins ALREADY feared and hated her for being green!! A child could have explained this to you.
Have you ever seen the Wizard of Oz? We already know why the munchkins are gleeful she’s dead lol.
Wasn’t the biggest fan of Wicked myself, but this comment is just so freaking oblivious! Ann, seriously as other commentors have pointed out the movie addressed how the munchkins came to hate her. It’s not the movie’s fault you have the media literacy skills of a goldfish!
.
What you are literally asking for is for Hollywood to produce movies and shows that dumb down the source material! Look at how many movie and tv-show adaptations have been released in the past four years that completely butchered the source material because Hollywood felt they needed to cater to people like you who need their hands held and can’t use their own brain to make connections.
I haven’t seen Wicked so I can;t comment about whether or not it deserves nomination however on your question of films being nominated without an ending, all 3 Lord of the Rings films were nominated for Best Picture, and only the last one truly had an ending (and yes, it was the only one that won of those 3). SO it is not unprecedented.
Agreed. This was a consolation prize to Grande. I hope Saldana wins.
Arianna Grande? Really?
I love her but in no way should she be nominated when there are many many options superior to her performance.
Agreed!!
Did you see Wicked? She did a phenomenal job. Well deserved. And I am NOT typically an Ariana fan.
I think if she had been submitted for best actress, she might not have been nominated. But they made it best supporting actress to keep her from competing directly with Cynthia Erivo, even though her role is just as prominent in the movie.
She was fantastic. I’ve never been a fan, never liked her vibe, think her songs are mediocre…she was a great choice for that role, and won me over!
If Cynthia didn’t get that Best Actress nod I would have rioted!!!
It would be great if the Academy shocked the world and voted for her to win so she can finally achieve EGOT status!!
Honestly, it’s like the Golden Globes. I would not have rioted this year, since there is always next. However, Cynthia and Ariana did remarkable jobs and deserve everything they can get.
I feel like I’m taking crazy pills, Emilia Perez was *awful*.
Nope you’re not alone in that thought!
Totally disagree. Great film with an amazing cast.
Now Wicked…. That’s a pile of something
You, gringos, really liked Emilia Pérez, huh…
Yeah, I don’t get it either, Im Still Here is far superior.
I’m Latino and loved it. Not sure what someone’s nationality/background has to do with liking it though.
Emilia Perez getting all these nominations is crazy to me
Agreed, I thought it was pretty bad outside of a couple performances. But when I think about it, I understand exactly why it’s getting so many nominations and so much praise.
I’m game for The Substance to win best picture. Nosferatu deserves its nominations. Flow better win best animated film. Meow
I’m all here for the resurgence of Demi Moore and love whenever Horror gets any love from the academy.
Emilia Perez is “American Fiction” coming true… The nominations for best song and script are unbelievable. Those songs don’t even make sense in Spanish.
The fact that the songs will not be performed is a disgrace. Heaven forbid there’s anything fun left at this show. “I’m just Ken” last year was the highlight of the show! Don’t know what they’re thinking. This will leave a lot of people tuning out.
I normally don’t like musicals, but Wicked rocked. I know it was half a movie, but the doesn’t negate its achievements. The green witch was amazing, but the other one was a bit of a scenery chewer. I give it 9 out of 10.
I remember back in the day when I would have watched or at least been familiar with all of the Oscar nominated movies, etc. but I’ve never even heard of most of these. My television and movie era has clearly ran it’s course, lol.
Yeah again outside of like best animated movie and visual and sound effects it’s basically a bigger version of the independent film awards
FERNANDA TORRES!!!!
IM STILL HERE!!!!
I hope it will overcome Emilia
For the first time in MY recorded history, I will not be watching the Academy Awards Ceremony this year. None of this year’s nominees are exciting. It appears that 2024 was a crappy year for cinema. I don’t mean to ruffle feathers, this is just MY opinion.
Pam Anderson was robbed.
They got Demi Moore so you can’t have two equally comeback actresses at the same time in the same category.
All movies I have not watched & probably will not watch. Feel like the Oscars have become irrelevant.
One thing I’ve never understood about the Oscars’ nominations is if a movie gets nominated in the foreign film category, why is it also considered in the best movie category?
I think cancelling the live song performances is a mistake.
I’m looking forward to what Conan will do as host but too many award shows preceding the Oscars has diluted much of the surprise / anticipation of who wins what. Maybe that’s why I enjoy the Tonys so much more – that and the musical performances and the show rarely goes into overtime and there’s usually one or two very witty original songs.
However, having said all that, maybe the show shouldn’t air this year considering how many people have lost their homes, businesses, jobs and lives because of the fires (still an ongoing threat)- why not donate the cost of putting on this show?
Because foreign films are also films.
Thanks for clearing that up, Tom!
Cynthia Erivo was Wicked. Great to see her get in, she’s amazing.
All these noms are well deserving. I’m sure I’ll read all about all the winners the day after the boring televised ceremony.
The Apprentice is here only because of Trump winning. It was righfully ignored at the Golden Globes.
Ariana was nominated cause they’re desperate for viewers. Clearly Margaret Qualley deserved her spot.
I’m not sure how it was ignored at the Globes when both Stan and Strong were both nominated there as well…
I was hoping long shot Pamela Anderson would get nominated. Hers and Demi’s performances were such unexpected career highlights.
Another Oscars to ignore… How Gladiator 2 was ignored is disappointing.. Watched it last night and enjoyed…
