Summary
This paper is a refutation of the existence, in Latin, in addition to the traditional “active” and “passive”, of a “middle voice” (expressed by analytic means e. g. se movet), which has been put forward recently. On the contrary, it will be shown that the construction “active verb + reflexive pronoun” is but an ordinary use of the active (transitive) voice, in which an anaphoric counterpart of the sujet (i.e. se) has the function Object. Consequently, a sentence as se movet brings about an “objective”, resultative view of the event, as any active (transitive) sentence does, in opposition to the “subjective” and “existential” representation of it which is expressed by a “passive” form like movetur. The demonstration will be supported by an accurate observation of contexts in which the “reflexive construction” and the “passive” form of a number of verbs are employed respectively.
