Plus que jamais a entifs à l’évolution de la situation sécuritaire sur le continent africain, les États-Unis réévaluent depuis deux ans la place de l’Afrique de l’Ouest(1) dans leur stratégie de défense et de sécurité nationale. Mais, c’est selon une doctrine toute particulière que le Pentagone œuvre dans ce e région, fondée sur le Light Footprint et le Stay Behind. Celle-ci repose sur une action indirecte, en retrait ou à faible engagement. Ainsi l’actuelle stratégie militaire américaine en Afrique de l’Ouest se traduit- elle par un appui aux forces armées étatiques actives dans la bande sahélo- saharienne (BSS), une présence militaire (discrète) renforcée et un approfondissement des coopérations de défense bilatérales avec les pays de la région. L’objectif est au mieux de lu er contre les groupes terroristes pour les neutraliser, au pire d’endiguer les zones aux prises avec des terroristes et où les États pourraient faillir à court-moyen terme, à l’aide d’alliés ables dotés d’une réelle capacité opérationnelle.
