Hablar de relaciones de pareja nos lleva a comprender como las sociedades se han conformado, ya que la pareja ha sido medular para su constitución. Para las civilizaciones más primitivas, la pareja representaba en sí misma una división del trabajo y de roles, valorando al hombre por su fortaleza física, encargado de la caza y de la protección y a la mujer por su capacidad como recolectora y como cuidadora de los hijos (Fisher, 1999). A pesar de que dentro de estas civilizaciones existía una determinación de roles que otorgaban funcionalidad a la pareja prevalecía la promiscuidad (Mercado, 2001; citada en Delgadillo y Gurrola, 2001). Así mismo cada cultura y sociedad particular han tenido y tienen una construcción propia del amor y de la pareja, por lo cual resulta importante realizar un análisis que recorra el trayecto y la evolución que han tenido a lo largo de más de dos siglos de historia. 1.1 ANTECEDENTES HISTÓRICOS DE LA PAREJA 1.1.1 Grecia Dentro de la mitología Griega, el amor estaba señalado como un estado alterado de la conciencia provocado por los dioses. Los griegos, relacionaban al amor con la irracionalidad, lo consideraban peligroso para quien lo experimentaba, ya que hería el corazón y cegaba a sus víctimas. Para la civilización Griega, existían dioses consagrados y relacionados a las diversas circunstancias del amor y de pareja: Eros y Afrodita. Afrodita está encargada de encender tanto sus amores como los ajenos, también está Himeneo, que representa la alegría de la noche de bodas (logró la hazaña de que la noche de bodas de Zeus y Hera se prolongará por trescientos años); las ninfas protectoras de las jóvenes casaderas y Hera protectora de las esposas, ella misma castiga a los hombres que buscan amores fuera del matrimonio y Creope, el Dios que instituyó la monogamia (Kreimer, 2005 citada en Ocampo, 2007).
