Recently, many researchers have been interested in designing the buildings to get the benefit from daylight inside, which saves a lot of building consumption for artificial lighting, which gives visual and thermal comfort and also contributes to reducing costs. Restoring older buildings retains cultural connections and enhances sensitivity to the past. Conservation process materials must be distinguishable from originals for easy removal or change while matching features, a challenging task. The goal is to adopt materials similar in texture, scale, color, and form to the original. The increasing need for a sustainable environment attracts the scientific community towards alternative natural materials instead of traditional ones, adopting ecological principles. Eco-friendly materials from agricultural waste are less polluting. Bio-based materials, like hemp and rice, offer good thermal properties and replace traditional materials. Accurate prediction of thermal radiation by applying rigorous model for the radiative heat transf... more Accurate prediction of thermal radiation by applying rigorous model for the radiative heat transfer combined with the conduction and the convection has been performed for a single and double window glazing subjected to solar and thermal irradiation. The glass window is analysed as a non-gray plane-parallel medium disctritized to thin layer as-suming the glass material as participating media in one-dimensional case, using the Radiation Element Method by Ray Emission Model (REM2). The model allows the calculation of the steady-state heat flux and the temperature distribution within the glass cover. The spectral dependence of the relevant radiation properties of glass (i.e. specular reflectivity, refraction angle and absorption coefficient) is taken into account. Cities are paying more attention to building energy use and carbon footprint for attaining sustai... more Cities are paying more attention to building energy use and carbon footprint for attaining sustainability. Within this building sector, there is a growing attention toward development and adoption of energy efficient retrofit strategies. Plagued by the lack of efforts in achieving comprehensive energy efficient retrofit solution sets (passive, active, and renewable energy systems), the authors acknowledge the concept of NZEB toward achieving energy efficiency by 2050. Toward this end, a numerical energy simulation modeling is carried out to retrofit an existing French “Puccini house” using ‘passive, energy efficient building systems and renewable energy’ strategies toward an NZEB target in the Mediterranean climate of Nice. The research is aimed at comparing residential building windows’ thermal performance with and wit... more The research is aimed at comparing residential building windows’ thermal performance with and without thermal shutters, and at examining thermal shutters’ performance upon being insulated with various types of insulation, glares, outside temperatures, and solar radiation. As an example, one case study based out of the UAE is chosen, covering the status of the housing typology and traits of building energy consumption. The study uses the primary tool of computer simulation software “DesignBuilder” to examine the impact of window shutters design on energy consumption and environmental impact. It was found that the usage of conventional insulating materials within the shutters is sufficient for the house to attain a reduction in heat gain of up to 50%. Furthermore, the application of the rolling shutters with analyzed control strategies recorded a potential reduction in equivalent CO2 emissions level, up to 15%, which would decrease the environmental burden on a national level.
