Innovation is seen as driven mostly by applications of information and communication technology (ICT). This report adopts a more comprehensive definition of innovation than the traditional one, taking into account both ICT-driven technological innovation and non-technological innovation. The report emphasizes the changing concept of the retail and wholesale trade sector which not just acts as a delivery channel of products to the customer, but forms a critical part of the producer value chain shaping producer business strategies. Furthermore, the sector is a provider of customer services connected with the products sold (e.g. warehousing, financial services) and embodies the client interface where customer preferences are shaped and expressed. Innovations mostly have the character of process and service innovations, for example new ways of selling, marketing, logistics and firm operations. The ongoing transformation of the sector is demonstrated by blurring distinctions between wholesale and retail, by diversity across horizontal branches, and by a diversity of organizational and strategic concepts. In this transformation, ICT (in particular e-commerce) as well as new organizational concepts fulfil an enabling role through facilitating the formation of client perceptions, desires and needs.

This paper provides a conceptual framework to understand innovation in education from a service economic perspective. This is done by bridging two rather disconnected research areas: service innovation and education innovation. The results indicate that (i) the characteristics of education as a service (such as interactive co-production) should be taken into account to better understand how innovations are created and implemented; (ii) innovation modes in education can be aligned with service innovation modes, mainly when a public service logic is adopted; (iii) the tension existing in service innovation between customization and standardization is replicated in the education sector; and (iv) multiagent frameworks in service innovation are particularly visible in innovative ...

This paper aims to assess the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and open innovation integrated within the public discourse in the social media of FinTech firms, using machine-learning-based social media analysis (SMA). Accordingly, we tracked the behavior of 21 firms based on the empirical material of 32,716 posts on Twitter. The outcomes showed dissimilar discourses based on FinTech firms’ activities. However, it was found that only financial infrastructure, lending, and personal finance fields have a discourse related to innovation and, to a lesser extent, related to the SDGs thematic. Thus, awareness of sustainable objectives is still far from being a relevant issue for FinTech, which, in general, has neglected to significantly mention SDGs; nonetheless, innovation and related terms ar...

To do so, each country has implemented different strategies, leading to very different forms of education provision. While Finnish emphasise on high trained and empowered teachers, student early intervention and weekly (multidisciplinary) team teachers meetings, Koreans encourage student hard work (in and out of school) and active learning by integrating ICTs in their daily learning (digital textbooks and cyber-home) which is complemented with parent support/interest. These two ways of providing education clearly raises the question of the role played by human resources and/or technology in education provision. To do so, we use each countries individual sample of the PISA-2012 database at student and school levels, and given the nest...

Firstly, it presents the case for services-related policies in the current European Union (EU). The services economy is frequently misunderstood, due to old and new myths that stem from the classic economic tradition. These myths obscure the role of the services economy in economic development. Nonetheless, the European services economy faces specific problems, such as lack of market integration, which amplifies arguments that justify policy actions toward services within a framework where market and systemic failures do apply. Secondly, this paper focuses on existing services-policies at the EU level, paying special attention to the internal market for services policies and to the complementary role of primarily non-regulatory policies. Within a comprehensive policy framework, each individual policy will have a higher impact, improved implementation and easier acceptance. Synergies among services-related policies should be promoted; the internal m...

Student entrepreneurs could derive business value for an idea by leveraging the two biggest opportunities provided by online hackathons: the diversity of the crowd of participants and virtual spatial proximity with attendees. This article is aimed at student entrepreneurs to help them undertake start-up activities, turning these benefits into validated learning and long-term networking.

Wrongly held beliefs—or myths—can hinder startups from turning new market opportunities into their favor (for example, by failing at diversification decisions) or undertaking wrong business decisions, e.g., diversifying in industries that have products of no real market value). Objectives: The objective of the paper is to identify the beliefs that drive the business decisions of startups in a pandemic and to isolate those beliefs that are merely myths. Further, this paper proposes strategic guidelines in the form of a framework to help startups make sound decisions that can lead to market success. Method: The two-step research method involved multiple case studies with five startups based in India, France, Italy, and Switzerland, to identify perceptual beliefs that drove strategic business decisions, followed by a case study ...
