With the downfall of the authoritarian regime ruling Mexico for more than seven decades, the rela... more With the downfall of the authoritarian regime ruling Mexico for more than seven decades, the relationship between politicians, the mass media and public opinion transformed dramatically. This paper addresses such a transformation of political communication by looking at the 1994, 2000 and 2006 presidential campaigns in comparative perspective. The analysis observes specific changes in the area, such as the displacement of the traditional centers of power that determined the political relations during the authoritarian regime as well as the breakdown of the corporatist compliances that characterized the media-government relations. Further traits that illustrate contemporary changes in political communication in Mexico is the establishment plural spectrum of powerful media whose barons act as powerful pressure groups; and the instability of Mexican electorate, which in turn fuels the prevalence of both independent and ‘soft vote’ over the ‘hard vote’. A collection of similar studies around the country shows that the state of Queretaro is an example of how the governors control the local media. The conclusion is that democracy has been installed on the federal level, however, this has not happened successfully at the subnational level. This research shows how the governors have managed to gain power at the national level but have lost counterweights at the local level during the period of political transition. For the case study two series of interviews were performed.

Journalist are hired under precarious labor conditions thus giving the local gover- nment much leeway to coopt their editorial line in exchange for economic resources. This research reveals how local media journalists have sustained an officials pro government edi- torial line, just as they did in the authoritarian days, and it analyses their current situation ba- sed on the “journalist professionalization” and “state control of local media” variables. The Mexican state of Queretaro was taken as case study for this research; journalists and former government officials were interviewed; content analysis was carried out, and a number of se- condary sources were collected depicting the relationship between governors and local media in Mexico. Hence, data analyses suggest that the state of Queretaro can stand as an example of the control exerted by governors on local media.
