Raluca BLAGA read Theatre Studies at the University of Arts Târgu-Mureș and Mathematics – Informatics at Petru Maior University Târgu-Mureș between 2002 and 2007. Between 2006 and 2008, she was a part of Theatre 74’s team – an independent, alternative theatre. In 2012 she joined the teaching staff of the University of Arts, Târgu-Mureș. Her current research interests concern the relationship between performance and audience. Serjeant Musgrave's Dance" or the First Step Into an Unknown Realm The paper entitled "Serjeant M... more Serjeant Musgrave's Dance" or the First Step Into an Unknown Realm The paper entitled "Serjeant Musgrave's Dance" or the First Step Into an Unknown Realm aims to bring into the limelight how the only performance signed by Radu Penciulescu at Târgu-Mureș State Theatre, Romanian department (1969) was set for the stage. Our paper will follow the local theatrical environment that absorbs the production (how does it absorb it? is another question that will be addressed). We will also follow the new artistic direction advanced by Radu Penciulescu, a new creative course for which this precise performance represented just the first step. In this endeavour, we'll try to capture the characteristics of the above-mentioned performance, bearing in mind one of Ion Fiscuteanu's statements which in an interview, labelled "Serjeant Musgrave's Dance" as a unique theatre experience.
North American period The purpose of this article is to bring to the forefront the theatrical act... more North American period The purpose of this article is to bring to the forefront the theatrical activity carried out for eight years by Theodor-Cristian Popescu in the North American cultural landscape. Following the path of the Romanian theatre director, the article presents the performances he directed during his master's degree at the University of Montana and also the theatrical events he staged in Montréal and Toronto, once he moved to Canada. Drawing on a variety of sources (press articles-reviews, interviews, press releases-, as well as program booklets, grant applications or evaluations of his teaching activity), the article aims to provide the Romanian public with a detailed presentation of Theodor-Cristian Popescu's theatrical activity abroad (theatrical animator, director, teacher).

Using specific artistic tools, the director manages to transform a closed play into an open work of art. The result can be classified as an efficient performance. Confronting this performance with the local theatrical environment, the result cannot be considered a cultural success.

Produced by Târgu Mureș National Theatre, the performance was included that time in National Theatre Festival’s selection, but it’s presence in Bucharest generated a vocal choir contesting its theatrical value. The author of this article was among those objectors. After more than a decade, the performance has for the author of this article a different quality. Its virtues are the subject of this present paper.

An important figure of Romanian theatre in the 1960s, the stage director proved to be a theatrical voice that was brave enough to ask important questions: why theatre? why do we make theatre? Every performance that carries his signature seems to rethink the perspective upon which we regard theatre. A stage director not too often mentioned and almost forgotten, Crin Teodorescu represents for the author of this article an important theatrical voice that must be listened nowdays.
This paper will present in a narrative form the documentary and the creative process followed by ... more This paper will present in a narrative form the documentary and the creative process followed by four young theatre directors while studying at the University of Arts from Tirgu-Mures as part of their master class program in Theatre Directing. Firstly, the reader will be familiarized with one of this master class curriculum’s assignments designed by Theodor-Cristian Popescu: to deliver a performative essay using as a starting point one famous Romanian theatre performance. Secondly, this presentation will record, for each of these students, the path from documents and archives to their exam/performance.
The purpose will not be to evaluate or investigate the artistic value of these products. The focus will be guided towards the students’ approach while accessing archive documents and the transformations of all these materials in an artistic concept.

Twenty years after the fall of the communist regime, the theater director Theodor-Cristian Popesc... more Twenty years after the fall of the communist regime, the theater director Theodor-Cristian Popescu theatrically assumes, as he states in his own words, a small provocative gesture: staging in October 2010, at Radu Stanca National Theatre from Sibiu, Aurel Baranga's play, “The Public Opinion”. Ingrained with specific communist dramaturgical flavors, in Theodor-Cristian Popescu's stage reading, Baranga's play takes the properties of a document. Therefore, the director's artistic endeavour, through the theatrical means that it uses, takes the form of a scenic essay. The present lecture will follow precisely those theatrical devices that constructed the performance. Thirty years after the fall of the communist regime, through this lecture, the director's small provocative gesture receives an answer via an analytical evaluation.
