Abstract Helmut Lachenmann is today one of the most influential living composers in the field contemporary music. After the death of the first generation of composers, emerged after the second post war (Luciano Berio, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luigi Nono, Mauricio Kagel, György Ligeti; etc.). And after that Pierre Boulez relatively stops his compositional practice, only Lachenmann is left as the creative referent par excellence. His way of conceiving musical composition has led him to re think the whole creative

Abstract This article is about the handling of time and its discursive evolution in music of the second half of the 20 th century. A tight bound has always existed between the different aesthetics that historically succeeded, and the way of conceiving musical time. Composers, throughout the different compositive styles, used different tools in order to modulate time, but what never changed was its essential functionality: time historically functioned as a regulator of musical discourse. This changed in the second half of the 20 th century. This article is about that change.

Pierre Boulez is one of the key composers in the second half of the XX century. His rationalist education conditioned his compositional aesthetic throughout his production, a reality that was projected far beyond his brief serial period. All musical materials that this creator uses in his works are self-justified through a complex network of relationships that support them. This did not prevent Boulez from exploring areas that in principle would seem alien to his sensitivity. We refer specifically to the open work, or more precisely to the fact of leaving aspects of the work free at the discretion of the conductor, the performer; or somebody else. This can be clearly seen in Rituel, a piece where an extreme concentration of musical materials coexist with a controlled opening of some aspects of the performance.
