In True Stories, Lucian mimics the paradoxographical discourse in its vocabulary, style, motifs, and mannerisms, yet introduces his material as pure fiction. I argue that Lucian claims the right to a new type of narrative, one that offers the audience not just the pleasure of marvelous stories, now avowed lies, but also instruction, through the opportunity to reflect (theoria) on the transformation of the old canons and to reposition oneself within the system of literary values.

It is paradigmatic of Lucian’s generic variety and especially of his generic mixis. Disguised as light satire, this text is rather, read in conjunction with other Lucianic programmatic texts, a light form of ars poetica in which the author, invoking the reversal of hierarchies and the license of the festival, claims the right to reverse and thus rewrite the literary nomoi.
