Malcom Knowles (1970) proposed a theory of adult learning; del Bueno later applied these principles to a model she described as competency-based nursing education. This article considers these two models and describes an innovative, cost-effective, continuing education model developed by a group of oncology nurses in one rural state. This model was one strategy to address their continuing learning needs.

The impact of its stereotypical myth versus the realistic lifestyle of cowboys and the subsequent effects on the women and children who share their lives are described in this article. This information has implications for health professionals and community planners who provide services to this group of individuals.

Essentially, these differences are geographical, social, and economic in nature, and the health status of individuals in either setting may be affected by these variations. The health issues of women that evolve from these rural factors are the focus of this article.

Traditional rural values were explored in relation to ruralities' health care-seeking behaviors, specifically mental health care. Part II highlights the opportunities and challenges of rural professional practice, particularly as they apply to nurses caring for those with emotional problems who need mental health services. Strategies are suggested to enhance the continuum of care for clients who live in environments with sparse resources.

Likewise, there is a critical need for process models that consider consumer heterogeneity. Continuous quality improvement (CQI) programs must look beyond whether or not services are accessible and cost-effective. The processes must also measure if services are acceptable and appropriate for a target population. This article describes how the discipline of anthropology can provide useful tools to obtain critically needed ethnocultural information.

Successful self-management of diabetes mellitus depends on self-care motivation and self-awareness, specifically designed to control symptoms and avoid complications. This systematic review uses telehealth intervention and smartphone-based applications for diabetes mellitus patients with randomized control trial, qualitative, and cross-sectional studies obtained from six databases. This review included inclusion and exclusion criteria established using population, intervention, comparison, outcomes and study (PICOS) framework, and then data were extracted, reviewed, and assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) tool. Seventeen selected articles that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria passed the selection through the selection process shown in the flow chart, which all research results show an impact on self-care management. The purpose of this study was to examine self-described hospital-to-home transition challenges encountered by older adults with a diagnosis of diabetes within the first 30 days following discharge. The qualitative responses for this paper emerged from a larger mixed methods study (n = 96) in which participants provided free responses specifying transition challenges during follow-up telephone interviews on the 7th day (n = 67) and 30th day (n = 55) post-discharge. Using inductive content analysis techniques four major themes emerged: a) "The daily stuff is difficult"; b) engineering care at home is complex; c) "life is very difficult"; and d) managing complex health problems is difficult. Findings suggest existing system-level metrics such as readmission rates fail to capture the complex and dynamic interplay of personal, family and social factors which complicate hospital-to-home transitions of older adults with pre-existing diabetes.

With funding from the National Library of Medicine, the Coalition published an Online Handbook for Rural Health Care Ethics which focused on the needs of clinicians and administrators in rural practice. Additional funding from the National Rural Health Association supported development of the Rural Ethics Training Manual; both are available at: http://dms.dartmouth.edu/cfm/resources/rhc/ For this session the speaker will discuss releveant bioethical topics and how these can be impacted by social, cultural, and economic contextual factors in a rural community. The Ethics Handbook and the Ethics Training Manual, two readily accessible resources that can be used by public health educators will be demonstrated. To be highlighted are practical and useful strategies to promote awareness and inform students in public health courses...

The Successful Practices Initiative highlights curricula that connect the Education for Health Framework with the Healthy People 2020 objectives. UCF's nursing program is an innovative exemplar case focusing on four courses in the undergraduate baccalaureate nursing program. Description: Annually, about 500 students are introduced to, write about and ultimately carry out the activities of health promotion/disease prevention reflective of Healthy People 2020 objectives. The components of integration include lecture, examination and 6 specific assignments across 4 theory/clinical courses delivered through multiple modalities. Lessons Learned: By grounding interventions in policy students identify outcomes and measures more readily. Assignments...
