Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London (UCL). Research focus on material culture and technology particularly in Andean South America. PhD University of Cambridge (1990-1995). Bill has conducted ethnographic, ethnoarchaeological and archaeological work including a project based around Raqchi, Dept. of Cuzco, Peru, which aimed to place the construction of the Inka site within a longer-term understanding of continuity and change in landscape development and the impact of successive expansionist states (Wari, Inka and Spanish) on local society. More recently he has been studying changes in the organization of pottery production, stoneworking and monumental architecture in the Cuzco region during the emergence of the Inka Empire.
Since 2005/06 West Dean College and the associated West Dean Estate in West Sussex have provided ... more Since 2005/06 West Dean College and the associated West Dean Estate in West Sussex have provided the home for practical training of institute of Archaeology students, for both the initiation ritual of the Experimental Archaeology Course (Primtec) and for the field training courses undertaken at the end of the first year. It is also the location of a long-term research project aimed at understanding human occupation and land-use in this part of the South Downs from prehistory to the present day. In this article the authors describe the first two years of activity of the West Dean Archaeology Project.
