The goal of this paper is to stress the importance of creating a sustainable and secure future for food by approaching the problem from the perspective of “excess”. Putting food waste and loss in the spotlight should increase the awareness of actual food availability (i.e. the “excess” food) while revealing the pressures of consumer expectations and its impact on the different stages of food waste throughout the supply chain. In order to do this, we must take a closer look at the problem of food “excess” rather than simply focusing on the problem of food scarcity, as suggested by Andrew Abbott.
