This dissertation addressed the question: why China is leading the development of renewable energy in the world? Since China is still a developing country, it is important to understand what caused China achieved the target. The literature revealed that the development of renewable energy highly depends on the subsidy and preferential policy (e.g., Chen et al., 2016). Therefore, the understanding of renewable energy policies is essential. Furthermore, China and the US are different in the political regime and structure. Relevant research found the different policy-making process set by the political structure affects the development and implementation of policies (e.g., Averchenkova et al., 2016). This dissertation argued that China can develop renewable energy effectively is because of its unique political structure and policymaking process, compared to the US. Furthermore, by the comparison between China and the US, this dissertation offers possible recommendations to both countries in developing renewable energy and its policies.
