In reality, it is merely the differential usage of the letter ‘zuad’, which has the z sound in Urdu and d sound in Arabic, or ‘duad’.

Qadri believes that Qawwali is the preliminary step in worship —“ibadat ki ibteda” — and has rewards for all who practice, preserve and promulgate it. It is a mark of extreme love for a higher entity which answers all love with his greater love, “jo chahta hai unko, usko dilate bhi hain” (he bestows all those who love him). Qadri traces his musical lineage to Ustad Jafar Khan Niazi of the Badayun gharana and has been performing Qawwalis since the age of 10. Having been immersed in the art form for 47 years, Qadiri represents an extinguishing breed of traditional Qawwals who perform in the Khanqahi circles and draw on only chaste Persian, Hindavi or Punjabi Sufi poetry for their kalams.

Rung becomes an attribute and an aspired consequence of the bond between the Beloved and the lover in Chishtiya Sufism, where the seeker seeks to be completely immersed in the colour of love through constant remembrance of Allah, propagated in the practice of Zikr and Sama in Chishtiya Sufism. Rung refers to an overwhelming, all encompassing, transmitted pervasiveness, which connects a lover to its destiny of love, unity and oneness through a sustained mystical ambition resulting in spiritual exaltation.

Chishtiya Sufism is a South Asian Sufi sect, where the Qawwali becomes the core of spiritual practice. Sufism represents “Ihsan” or the will “to do beautiful things”. Sufism represents the essential core of Islam and an all-embracing concept of ishq/love which links a seeker to the sought, the lover to the Beloved and the Qawwali becomes the celebratory core of this Sufi practice.
