However, Ambient Intelligence is not just constrained to user behaviour pattern matching, but to wisely supervise the whole environment, satisfying those unforeseen requirements or needs, by means of rational decisions. This work points at the lack of commonsense reasoning, as the main reason underlying the existance of these idiots savant systems, capable of accomplishing very speci?c and complex tasks, but incapable of making decisions out of the pre?xed behavioral patterns. This work advocates for the integration of the commonsense reasoning and understanding capabilities as the key elements in bridging the gap between idiot savant systems and real Ambient Intelligence systems.

When designing these complex systems, one of the most time-consuming tasks is the definition of the communication interfaces between the different components through a number of scattered heterogeneous processing nodes. That is not only a complex task, but also very specific for a particular implementation, which may limit the flexibility of ...

The incapability to foresee or react to all the events that take place in a specific environment ... more The incapability to foresee or react to all the events that take place in a specific environment supposes an important handicap for Ambient Intelligence systems, expected to be self-managed, proactive, and goal-driven. Endowing such systems with capabilities to understand and reason about context seems like a promising solution to overcome this hitch. Supported on the service-oriented paradigm, composing rather than combining services provides a reasonable mean to implement versatile systems. This paper describes how systems for Ambient Intelligence can be improved by combining automatic service composition and reasoning capabilities upon a distributed middleware framework.

Partial reconfiguration process management still faces a set of open problems that have thus far made it impossible to take full advantage of partial and dynamic reconfiguration. The work presented in this article proposes a novel architecture, development workflow, and modelling approach for dynamically reconfigurable systems management using an object model that offers a global solution. This solution is built on a system-level middleware that provides the infrastructure and tools for communication between different components in heterogeneous embedded systems. Several experiments were performed to test and evaluate each part of our proposed solution, and the obtained results are presented. These results demonstrate the excellent performance of our proposed solution.

El gran número de nodos que puede llegar a implicar y la heterogeneidad del software utilizado en este tipo de escenarios hace que los costes de mantenimiento y gestión de los mismos sean muy elevados tanto en recursos como en tiempo.

This system is made up of a speech recognizer (for decoding the spoken utterance into a word sequence), a natural language translator (for converting a word sequence into a sequence of signs belonging to the sign language), and a 3D avatar animation module (for playing back the signs). In order to increase the system adaptability, this paper presents new improvements in all the three main modules for generating automatically the task dependent information from a parallel corpus: automatic generation of Spanish variants when generating the vocabulary and language model for the speech recogniser, an acoustic adaptation module for the speech recogniser, data-oriented language and translation models for the machine translator and a list of signs to design. The avatar animation module includes a new editor for rapidly design of the required signs. These developments have been necessary to reduce the effort when adapting a Spanish into Spanish sign language (LSE: Lengua de Signos Española) translation system to a new domain. The whole translation presents a SER (Sign Error Rate) lower than 10% and a BLEU higher than 90% while the effort for adapting the system to a new domain has been reduced more than 50%.
