Only thirteen samples yielded enough ascospores to determine their sensitivity to benomyl. Twelve of the samples represented an area of approximately 4.000 ha from the Northern part of Costa Rica (the cantons of San Carlos and Los Chiles), and one was from a nonsprayed home orchard in Orosi, in the Central Valley located more than 250 km away from San Carlos. AIl of the samples from the Northem region yielded benomyl resistant ascospores, although benomyl is not normally used in those areas. Conversely, 99% of the ascospores obtained in Orosi were sensitive; this suggests that the M. citri wild population is benomyl-sensitive. It was found that 75% of the orchards sampled came from the same nursery, where the phytosanitary program includes five benomyl applications ayear. Furthermore, 10 M.citri sam...

Alternatives to chemical control against this disease are crucial to prevent damage to human health and the environment. The antagonism of Plant-Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) on P. capsici, and its ability to reduce wilt in pepper plants were evaluated. PGPR strains previously isolated from sugarcane and rice were identified, using 16S RNA gene sequence, as Pseudomonas fluorescens PC4, Stenotrophomonas rhizophila PC9, Pseudomonas fragi PC11 and Azospirillum lipoferum PCJ2. The inhibition of P. capcisi growth was evaluated in vitro, in the presence of the PGPR. The effect of the four bacterial strains on pepper plants inoculated with P. ca...

B... more Infrared thermography can be used to detect water-stress induced temperature changes in plants. Bacterial wilt, a destructive disease of tomato caused by Ralstonia solanacearum, induces water stress in the host, leading to wilt and plant death. Fifty plants were inoculated with a bacterial suspension of 108 colony forming units (CFU) and fifty noninoculated plants were maintained as healthy controls. Leaf temperature of inoculated and non-inoculated plants was measured with two infrared sensors, a low-cost infrared thermometer, and a thermal camera. The test was performed twice. In the first experiment, the incidence of bacterial wilt was 62%. Leaf temperature of healthy and diseased plants was similar for four days after inoculation. On the fifth and sixth days, leaf temperature of inoculated plants was 0,9 °C and 1,9 oC higher, respectively, than the temperature of healthy plants. Wilt symptoms were first observed seven days after inoculation. In the second experiment, which coinc...

The effect of vermicomposting process on elimination of the fungus Colletotrichum acutatum present in leaf residues of leatherleaf fern (Rumohra adiantiformis) and the bacteria Pectobacterium carotovorum from infected potato (Solanum tuberosum) tubers was evaluated. In both assays, wood boxes divided in 3 compartments were used; the central section was filled with substrate containing earthworms (Eisenia foetida), and the lateral sections with the infected material. The compartments were separated with nets that allowed the earthworms to pass to the vermicomposting treatment but not to the control treatment. The presence of C. acutatum in the leaf residues was detected by weekly counts of conidia during 70 days. The population of P. carotovorum in the potato residues was evaluated using the viable cell count method in specific culture media at days 26 and 41, and by the Most Probable Number (NMP) technique a...
