Frano Combrinck
I am a South African resident who realized the many limitations in the built environment that limit people with special needs to join society in everyday activities like social, recreational, spiritual, and economical. The portion of disadvantaged society in South Africa that is bound to walking or using public transport is the majority. Yet, our built environment and public transport facilities, infrastructure, and fleet are not conducive and accommodating to the majority of our population. Pedestrians include vulnerable people living with disabilities like the deaf, blind, and citizens who use wheelchairs. I have been involved in research and development in South Africa for over 13 years now. I have gained experience in disability accommodation while working in London for five years, from 2002-2007.

I am producing a set of drawings/ images, to assist the public and designers to understand how the Department of Transport's National Technical Requirements for Tactile Pedestrian Crossings (NTR1) can be applied into the built environment, following Universal Design Principles.
The images are continually improving and developing, and I am improving technical correctness like road markings and traffic signal design as I go on.
