He was an art historian born into a Belgian family of conservator-restorers. The authors were privileged to interview him in 1997, 2009 and 2015. Verbeeck discusses Philippot’s relation to and reinterpretation of the philosophy of Cesare Brandi, his definition of restoration as both an intellectual judgment and a critical act, and his influence on the establishment of an interdisciplinary curriculum for pioneer training programs. Stoner describes Philippot’s emphasis on the impact of language on communication of philosophical concepts in his 1997 interview in addition to key points in his publications once they were available in English, especially his description of patina as the normal effect that time has on material and the search for equilibrium in c...

Eleanor and Russell Quandt were pioneers in this area, and now there are a number of interdisciplinary teams studying such artists as Henry O. Tanner, Sargent, Whistler, and many others

The Detroit Institute frescoes by Diego Rivera were treated in situ in their galleries in 1987 while the public watched. Rembrandt Peale's large painting of THE COURT OF DEATH, also at the Detroit Institute of Arts, was treated in public view behind Plexiglas in 1994-95. Awards from conservation associations now celebrate these outreach initiatives, and international informational museum websites now frequently feature films of conservation treatments in progress.

Gamblin and Golden both run small businesses for the manufacture and distribution of regular and custom-made paints for artists and conservators, carrying on the tradition of Père Tanguy from the age of Impressionism and Bocour and Levison for the Color Field and Abstract Expressionist painters. It is hoped that this paper will complement research and presentations from the ASTM and the modern paint collaborative research project now in progress by Thomas Learner, Michael Schilling, and René de la Rie.
