Linear and volumetric measurements were performed on 117 specimens (test diameter > 40 mm) and the ratios between them were analyzed along with Aristotle’s lantern weight participation (AL index). The potential model was tested between AL wet weight and tooth height (log data), estimating the coefficients by linear regression. Echinoid specimens from Pituba (n = 57) manifested a higher average degree of sphericity and test thickness. Proportionally, this population also showed higher AL and tooth height, indicating that the dimensions of this structure exhibit particularities in the spatial arrangement along the oral-aboral axis of the echinoids. Negative allometric relationships (β < 1) were observed in all specimens. The environments with distinct characteristics and wide food availability associated with a broad spectrum of the trophic niche occupied by the populations point out modulations and specializations of morphofunctional strategies and the expression of phenotypes.

The species of Ophiocoma are difficult to identify due to high morphological variation, especially when different stages of development are observed. Here, based on morphological analyses, two Brazilian morphotypes of Ophiocoma were studied and characterized, Ophiocoma sp. NB (Northeastern Brazil) and Ophiocoma sp. TMV (Trindade and Martin Vaz Archipelago), and subsequently thoroughly analysed to confirm whether they were the same species or not. After the morphological studies, including external morphology, morphometry and microstructural characters, and analysis of molecular data, involving the 16S gene, it was concluded that Ophiocoma sp. NB and Ophiocoma sp. TMV do not correspond to the same species, the first being identified as Ophiocoma echinata (Lamarck, 1816) and the latter being a new species. This new species is characterized by two tentacle scales on the first arm se...

The Brazilian northeastern coast suffered in 2019 the greatest acute impact of oil in the country... more The Brazilian northeastern coast suffered in 2019 the greatest acute impact of oil in the country’s history, with all states in the region being affected by extra-heavy oil. Holothuria (Halodeima) grisea is a detritivorous holoturoid, which ingests sediment to feed, and can passively ingest oil from spills existing in the sediment. To investigate the occurrence of oil in the intestinal content of H. (H.) grisea, a N of 20 individuals was collected on the Salvador coast (BA) in October 2019 between the coordinates 12°57 ‘S / 38°20’ W. Of this total, 10 individuals were found dead in the environment and 10 collected alive, for comparison purposes. Of the individuals found dead, 40% were eviscerated (without intestines) and it was not possible to carry out content analysis. Of the 6 remaining dead individuals, 67% had oil in their intestinal contents. For the 10 live sea cucumbers collected, none was eviscerated and all had a full intestine, with oil being observed in the intestinal co...
