There is no business or industry which is not involved in solving optimization problems. A variety of optimization techniques compete for the best solution. Economic Dispatch (ED) is also one of the optimization problem. ED is the process of determining optimal output of available number of electric power generating stations in order to meet total system load, at a minimum possible cost while serving power to the public in a robust and reliable manner satisfying physical and operational constraints. Scarcity of energy resources, ever growing production cost of generation and increased load demand, there is a need to optimize the economic dispatch problem. In this research work, a hybrid technique proposed to solve non-linear ED problem named as Hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization with Gravitational Search Algorithm (HPSO-GSA) considering/neglecting valve point effects, prohibited operating zones, ramp rate limits and transmission losses. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed Hybrid PSO-GSA algorithm has been tested on different generating unit test systems with different constraints and defined load demands. The simulation results of proposed algorithm are in comparison with the techniques in literature proves the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

So the focus of utility companies has shifted towards increased customer focus, enhanced performance and to provide reliable supply at low cost. The electric power system must be operated in a way to schedule generations economically of generation facilities. In last two decades many evolutionary techniques has been developed to solve the optimization problems. Particle swarm optimization has acquired much recognition due to less memory requirement and its inherent simplicity. Particle swarm optimization technique proved to be having strong potential for solving complex and high dimensional optimization problem. PSO is free from local minimum solution convergence which is often encountered while solving nonlinear and non-convex optimization problem through conventional techniques. This paper presents a summarized view of application of PSO for solving power economic dispatch problem.

This paper is useful to obtain meter reading when desired so meter readers don't need to visit each customer for the consumed energy data collection and to distribute the bill slips. Microcontroller can be used to monitor and record the meter readings. In case of a customer defaulter, no need to send a person of utility to cutoff the customer connection. Utility can cut off and reconnect the customer connection by short message service (SMS). Furthermore, the customer can check the status of electricity (load) from anywhere. In this system energy meter readings are being transferred by making use of GSM.
