This notion has been underestimated in favor of descriptions based on subpersonal neural processes that discard it as a tributary of objectionable idealistic approaches on mental life research and as irrelevant from the theoretical and clinical point of view. To identify the theoretical problems that these descriptions necessarily entail, we conduct a critical reading of three authors from the neurosciences field who represents this perspective: John Taylor, Douglas Hofstadter, and Thomas Metzinger. Through a critical reading of their positions we seek to point out certain conceptual problems that compromise this non-self perspective. We then take phenomenology as an example of other theoretical descriptions of the subject that offer a non-idealistic and non-metaphysical perspective of subjective structuring. We then build the argument of why abolishing the notion of the subject means putting at risk one’s very ability to discern what is psychopathology.

Methods It is a cross-sectional study with women aged 20-59 enrolled in two Primary Health Care Units making use of a questionnaire containing socio-demographic variables, social support, self-assessment of general health status, lifestyle, morbidity and women's health. Depression was evaluated according to Patients Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Results From 1,958 women included in this analysis, 28,5% are aged 30-39; 15,4% did not finish High School; 54,5% do not work or have never worked and 44,2% defined themselves as not white. Factors associated with depression episodes in the population studied: lower educational background, currently having a job, previous diagnosis of psychiatric disorders. Protective factors which were observed: being married or living with a partne...

Two works by Foucault (History of Madness and Psychiatric Power) are contrasted with Madness and Democracy, by the latter authors. It is argued that a society's political and assistance strategies about madness are shaped by the conceptual bases defining what constitutes the field of psychiatric theory and how it was formed. The article calls attention to the diverse consequences that these two approaches may have on the reform of Brazilian psychiatry.
