In addition, one new species, Oxypetalum urceolatum , is described, illustrated, and compared to its putative closest relatives. Oxypetalum urceolatum forms a complex with O. erianthum, O. brachystemma, O. dactylostelma , O. dombeyanum , O. molle, O. pearsonii , and O. fuscum . Morphologically, O. urceolatum appears most closely related to O. dactylostelma , from which it differs in having a conical, rather than expanded, style-head appendage and a glabrous, not pilose, throat to the corolla. In addition to this new species, we present a key to species of Oxypetalum in Bolivia.

The last is a new species from the Paraje Teyú Cuaré, San Ignacio, Misiones Province, Argentina, which is described and illustrated here. It shares some morphological features with O. jorgensenii, but, overall, it does not closely resemble any other species of the genus morphologically in its unique assemblage of characteristics. In addition to this new species, we here report two additional species for the first time in Argentina.

This species is similar to B. laxa, especially in its frondose thyrsoid inflorescence, compound corona, and linear leaves. It is, however, distinguished from B. laxa by internodes (up to 4 cm long), peduncles (4.2–5mm long) and much shorter pedicels (4–6 mm long), erect leaves, attenuated at the base, and partial inflorescences that alternate with 2–4 flowers. B. furlanii is proposed for Endangered status under IUCN guidelines (EN B2abiii), and a key to all Barjonia species is included in this study.

DNA was extracted from 25 individuals of five populations of A. quebracho-blanco from Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil. Six ISSR primers were used to characterize the genetic diversity and structure of this species. The genotypes were grouped according to a distance matrix, considering the genetic diversity indices of Nei (He), Shannon (H’), polymorphic information content (PIC), and heterozygosis (H). The populations showed an average genetic diversity that ranged from 0.09 to 0.15 for the Shannon index and from 0.19 to 0.31 for the Nei index; the Mantel test was not significant (r2 = 0.25, P = 0.106). The results obteined for the sampled populations reveal that conservation units are indispensable for conserving the species genetic resources. In addition, it ...

The midwestern region has the second highest diversity, with 30 species, after the northern region, and Mato Grosso do Sul state has 15 species. This study provides macroscopic and microscopic wood features for ten species from A. section Aspidosperma and A. section Pungentia (Apocynaceae) from Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. These characteristics can aid in the identification of Aspidosperma species because the nine species of these two sections have many morphological similarities; moreover, the wood of these species is economically important for timber production. Through macroscopic and microscopic analysis procedures, the characteristics of the wood and the organoleptic properties allowed recognition and distinction of the studied taxa. The characters of diagnostic value for recognition of the sections are vessel frequency and arrangement, and ray width. Individually, each species had a set of characteristics that allowed its identification: wood color; vessel arrangement; vessel length; ray visibility, ray composition and width; presence of crystals, starch grains and lipids in axial and/or ray parenchyma cells. The results may support conscientious exploitation by industries by facilitating the correct identification of the species, and will also help in the detection of illegal timber logging.

This new taxon is described and compared with the most morphologically similar species, A. quirandy and A. tomentosum. In its wood anatomy, A. flaviflorum is unique within the genus by the very scanty axial parenchyma and the lack of a line of axial parenchyma delimiting the growth rings.
