To update the knowledge about the scorpiofauna in Ceará, a distribution list of scorpions collected/received by municipal agents of the Health Surveillance Service was performed in 165 municipalities (89%) of Ceará (2018 – 2019) and deposited in the Dr. Thomaz Corrêa Aragão Entomology Laboratory scientific collection, including species distribution maps and ecological data. This study included a total of 999 scorpions from two families (Buthidae and Bothriuridae) and eleven species. The most abundant species were: Tityus stigmurus (40.1%), Jaguajir rochae (37.2%), Bothriurus asper (8.3%) and Bothriurus rochai (6.7%), mainly inhabiting municipalities in the Caatinga biome. The first record of Tityus confluens and Tityus maranhensis in the Sobral mesoregion is herein presented, expanding the distribution of these species in ...

Epidemiological studies on accidents caused by venomous animals are scarce in the Northeast region of Brazil, mainly in the state of Ceará. The present study aimed to describe the epidemiological features of envenomation cases involving venomous animals in the State of Ceará, Northeastern Brazil, from 2007 to 2019. METHODS: The online Notifiable Diseases Information System was consulted for data on all envenomation cases involving venomous terrestrial animals. Data collected were evaluated for the number of accidents/year, number of accidents/zoological group, antivenom therapy, zone of occurrence, sex, age-group distribution, and deaths. RESULTS: A total of 54,980 cases were recorded, with the highest incidence being that of scorpion stings (67.2%), predominantly in women (52.4%; odds ratio=3.6; 95% confidence interval=3.5-3.8), equally affecting people aged 10-19 years and 40-59 years ...

There is still a large number of underreported cases, the collection of epidemiological data is deficient, and the ecological and epidemiological knowledge of this envenomation remains limited due to the lack of updated regional and local information. This study describes the epidemiological profile of snakebites recorded by the Notifiable Diseases Information System from 2008 to 2018 in the state of Ceará. The data were organized according to the municipalities of the health macro-regions, considering the variables: sex, snake, gravity and deaths. A total of 8,233 cases was found, with an annual incidence of 8.6/100,000 inhabitants, and a higher prevalence of accidents caused by Bothrops snakes (64%), in men (87.4%) in the Sobral region (25.5%). However, the highest incidence rate was found in the Sertão Central (299.7/100,000). Most cases were considered mild (62%), bu...

There are still few studies evaluating the cellular response against Bothrops leucurus venom (BlV). This study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxic effect of crude BlV on culture of VERO E6 cells. Neutral Red incorporation (NR) and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) tests were performed for viable cells, and Trypan Blue (TB) dye exclusion test was performed for non-viable cells. The differences between the groups were evaluated by ANOVA-One-Way and Dunnet through the program Graph Pad 5.0 with significance of 5%. The 50% cytotoxic concentration (CC50) of BlV was 7.86 μg/mL. There was a trend of dose-dependent reduction on cell viability in all assays evaluated. However, MTT and NR tests were more sensitive for the evaluation of BlV cytotoxicity on the VERO E6 cell line.
