Focusing on the system of k’uychi, a prescriptive device of chromatic gradation (dégradé), it is intended to demonstrate how it works as a mechanism for building an expressive language, consistent with the Andean cosmological foundations.

The time of the ancestors belongs to another world and is not of the same nature as that of the present world. However, recognition of the continuity of existence is framed by a pattern, not that of factual causality or historical transformation, but the permanent renewal of agreements between the powers of the many agents of the cosmos. Textual regimes that express this kind of memory are organized according to the same formal logic: the complementarity of asymmetric halves. According to this syntax, the past is complementary to the present, and this world is complementary to the world of the ancestors. Both are contemporary and coextensive, and it is the consortium of their powers that makes possible the reproduction of life. What this Andean cosmology suggests in conceptual terms is that historicity as a universal way of knowing is displaced by a more general concept of memory, of which historicity is only one of its possible modes.

This division here is fundamentally seen as an outcome of a specific analytical frame. A change of ethnological model could dissolve frontiers presumed as natural, for example between Andes and Amazonia. In this sense, and from a specific ethnographic case, this paper suggests, at least in a synthetic and preliminary way, an approximation of those two regions. This is only possible taking an opposite theoretical perspective from that other that established the continental great divide.

It suggests that the great divide between highlands and lowlands, far from simply being the translation of “natural facts”, responds to specific analytical perspectives that mobilize privileged models (the idea of State, for example) whose semantic content is almost always extrinsic to the native cultural logic. Nevertheless, if we change the basic criterion from “social organization” to “cosmology”, what had before been viewed as different by nature may find unusual continuities. In this regard, by reviewing some significant ethnographic references for the Andean case and discussing Philippe Descola’s latest proposals, we take the concept of “multinaturalism”, coined by Eduardo Viveiros de Castro, as an auspicious notion to express this continuity of cosmological character between the lowlands and highlands of South America.

It intends also to introduce new analytical concerns suggested from a specific empirical case: that from the Eastern mountain ranges of this region.

Under this manifestation (actually, a rhetorical attack to indigenous rights established by a large indigenist tradition), military criticism try to discredit the State indigenist politics as a whole. This article appreciates both the anachronism of these critics regarding the large Brazilian indigenist legal tradition and their affiliation with a more recent authoritarian tradition; but it also observes how discursive elements of this last one (the authoritarian tradition) face the new debate about social regulation, regarding the notion of difference and the meaning of collective rights concerned to it.
