Leituras nesta direção foram avançadas por R. Sorabji (1993) e J. Labarrière (2000), entre outros. Existem dois tópicos de discussão relacionados sobre este assunto: o da escala da natureza e o das capacidades cognitivas dos animais. Primeiramente vou discuti-los e a seguir pretendo enfrentar uma questão conectada, a saber, se Aristóteles pensa que os seres de complexidade menor na escala da natureza existem de algum modo para o benefício dos seres mais complexos e se isso é usado como justificativa para que nós façamos uso deles.

Além disso, defende-se que as ações corretas estão em uma justa medida porque elas representam uma resposta apropriada às circunstâncias em vista da finalidade humana correta, a eudaimonia. Em relação à tese aristotélica que há uma justa medida ou meio-termo, excesso e deficiência onde há um contínuo, defende-se que este contínuo é o das emoções que são a base sensível das ações. Embora isso seja assim, não é verdade que as emoções sejam prioritárias às ações em termos de valor moral.

Essas duas teses permitem a Aristóteles concluir que o bem mais desejável está na alma e a partir daí fazer uma argumentação em termos de ergon, função ou atividade característica, da alma. O que se pode observar, entretanto, é que se o ergon da alma pode explicar serem fins sabedoria teórica e virtude moral, o mesmo é menos facilmente defensável no caso do prazer. Com efeito, tomar o prazer como fim parece ser tomar uma satisfação subjetiva com o que quer que seja, de modo que o ergon poderia explicar a satisfação subjetiva no máximo com algumas coisas, mas não com todas. Para resolver isso, procura-se no artigo interpretar uma passagem anterior, I, 5, 1215b15-1216a10, como responsável por fazer uma restrição no domínio dos prazeres que podem contar como finalidades para o ser humano.

Essa posição será rejeitada ainda neste livro. No entanto, mais adiante na Ética, ele terá de mostrar qual é a relação entre o prazer e o tipo de vida que ele acha o melhor para todos os homens. Apesar da importância dessa discussão, não queremos aqui investigar qual o papel do prazer na vida feliz e sim qual o papel do prazer na vida virtuosa. Aris-tóteles irá identificar a vida feliz com a vida virtuosa, seja do ponto de vista ético, seja do ponto de vista intelectual. A vida eticamente virtuosa envolve prazeres e dores. O que queremos perguntar é, pois, qual a relação do prazer e da dor com a vida eticamente virtuosa, não com a felicidade. Assim, estamos nos propondo a apresentar um estudo sobre a investigação do prazer feita por Aristóteles no contexto de sua discussão da virtude ética, mais especificamente da virtude que envolve diretamente os prazeres corporais: a temperança ou sōphrosune. Se dissermos que a disposição virtuosa e a ação virtuosa são benéficas para nós e os outros, parece que estamos alinhando-nos a um consequencialismo. Se dissermos que é aquilo que constitui e nos capacita para a vida boa (o que seria a resposta grega), fica faltando especificar o que é uma vida boa para que possamos entender essa resposta e diferenciá-la de um consequencialismo. Essa apresentação refere-se, então, à busca por uma clareza nesta resposta e ela o faz através de uma noção característica da vida ética grega, a saber, o conceito de kalon, que podemos traduzir inicialmente por 'belo'. Fazemos isso, pois as virtudes são associadas ao belo.

Os primeiros capítulos são, então, dedicados aos passos fundamentais da investigação: é o começo em que se dá pequenos passos através dos quais se faz grandes avanços. Esses passos iniciais consistem na apresentação da noção de bem e de bem supremo. Essas duas noções são centrais a qualquer ética, mas são em especial da aristotélica. Apesar disso, Aristóteles foi acusado de ter apresentado sua noção de bem supremo em um argumento falacioso. O objetivo aqui não é especialmente enfrentar essa acusação, mas fazer uma nova tentativa de compreender esses primeiros passos na sua complexidade.
