# Abstract:
The aim of this research was to develop and deploy efficient deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) frameworks for detecting and discriminating between various categories of designer drugs. These are of particular relevance in forensic contexts, aiding efforts to prevent and counter drug use and trafficking and supporting associated legal investigations.
Our multinomial classification architectures, based on Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier-Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectra, are primarily tailored to accurately identify synthetic cannabinoids. Within the scope of our dataset, they also adeptly detect other forensically significant drugs and misused prescription medications.
The artificial intelligence (AI) models we developed use two platforms: our custom-designed, pre-trained Convolutional Autoencoder (CAE) and a structure derived from the Vision Transformer Trained on ImageNet Competition Data (ViT-B/32) model.
In order to compare and refine our models, various loss functions (cross-entropy and focal loss) and optimization algorithms (Adaptive Moment Estimation, Stochastic Gradient Descent, Sign Stochastic Gradient Descent, and Root Mean Square Propagation) were tested and evaluated at differing learning rates.
This study shows that innovative transfer learning methods, which integrate both unsupervised and supervised techniques with spectroscopic data pre-processing (ATR correction, normalization, smoothing) and present significant benefits. Their effectiveness in training AI systems on limited, imbalanced datasets is particularly notable.
The strategic deployment of CAEs, complemented by data augmentation and synthetic sample generation using the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) and class weights, effectively address the challenges posed by such datasets.
The robustness and adaptability of our DCNN models are discussed, emphasizing their reliability and portability for real-world applications. Beyond their primary forensic utility, these systems demonstrate versatility, making them suitable for broader computer vision tasks, notably image classification and object detection.

# Abstract:
We are presenting a convolutional neural network (CNN) application recognizing the class identity of synthetic cannabinoids based on their Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectra.
The results indicate that this CNN system can be efficiently used to distinguish JWH synthetic cannabinoids from other substances of forensic interest, but also from other types of synthetic cannabinoids. One of the main advantages of the system is that it can also operate on mobile ATR-FTIR spectrometers used in field operations.

# Abstract:
This paper presents the alternative training strategies we tested for an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) designed to detect JWH synthetic cannabinoids.
In order to increase the model performance in terms of output sensitivity, we used the Neural Designer data science and machine learning platform combined with the programming language Python. We performed a comparative analysis of several optimization algorithms, error parameters and regularization methods. Finally, we performed a new goodness-of-fit analysis between the testing samples in the data set and the corresponding ANN outputs in order to investigate their sensitivity.
The effectiveness of the new methods combined with the optimization algorithms is discussed.

# Abstract:
We are presenting the results obtained by computing different toxicity indices for some of the newest JWH synthetic cannabinoids, by using (Q)SAR models, ADME(T) predictions, simulations of NMR spectral techniques and other different computational dedicated software packages and forensic analytical tools.
We have examined the main physical and chemical properties and evaluated the behavioral neurotoxicity and pharmacokinetic profile of 16 aminoalkylindole class-derived synthetic cannabinoids JWH as compared to the Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), which was chosen as a standard compound. For this purpose, the geometries of the molecules have been optimized by using the AM1 semi-empirical quantum method.
The conclusions of a comparative analysis of the toxicities of synthetic and natural cannabinoids are presented.

# Abstract:
An Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) model identifying JWH Synthetic Cannabinoids, that we have developed based on a combination of topological, 3D-MoRSE (Molecule Representation of Structure based on Electron diffraction) and ADMET (Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion and Toxicity) molecular descriptors, is described and analyzed.
The validation results indicate that this computerized system has a very high potential for efficiently predicting the class membership of JWH and discriminating them from a large variety of (non-JWH) substances of forensic interest.

#Abstract:
This study evaluates the impact of the dataset size and of the number of molecular descriptors selected to build Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) screening for JWH synthetic cannabinoids.
The aim is to determine how to most economically use the available data on these illicit drugs and still avoid overfitting. The results indicate a proportional decrease in the number of inputs in terms of memory requirements, processing speed, and numerical precision by fitting a models with the same database of designer drugs and the same test set for each different sized training dataset (having 25, 50, and 100 samples respectively). They also suggest that the models can be trained very well with 150 and well with 100 samples. Quite modest improvements are recorded for 50 and 25 samples.

# Abstract:
During the last decade, a growing prevalence of new psychoactive substances (NPS) has been noticed by the law enforcement agencies. Although NPS have no medical use due to their very high toxicity, they are often sold on the black market.
NBOMe defines a group of toxic amphetamines that has as parent compound 25I-NBOMe, a synthetic derivative of 2C-I (2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenetylamine). In this paper, we are presenting a series of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) designed to identify the NBOMe class membership based on a mixture of topological and 3D-MoRSE descriptors.
For this purpose, the molecular structures of 160 compounds representing NBOMe compounds, narcotics, sympathomimetic amines, potent analgesics, as well as their main precursors have been first optimized.
Then a molecular database was formed by computing a large number of topological and 3D-MoRSE descriptors that characterize these structures. This database was used as input for building an ANN system designed to recognize NBOMes.
The relevance of the input variables on its classification performance has been assessed and new systems have been built by using different combinations of selected topological and 3D-MoRSE descriptors. The best performing system has been found by comparing various classification efficiency criteria.

# Abstract:
The aim of this research was to develop and deploy efficient deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) frameworks for detecting and discriminating between various categories of designer drugs. These are of particular relevance in forensic contexts, aiding efforts to prevent and counter drug use and trafficking and supporting associated legal investigations.
Our multinomial classification architectures, based on Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier-Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectra, are primarily tailored to accurately identify synthetic cannabinoids. Within the scope of our dataset, they also adeptly detect other forensically significant drugs and misused prescription medications.
The artificial intelligence (AI) models we developed use two platforms: our custom-designed, pre-trained Convolutional Autoencoder (CAE) and a structure derived from the Vision Transformer Trained on ImageNet Competition Data (ViT-B/32) model.
In order to compare and refine our models, various loss functions (cross-entropy and focal loss) and optimization algorithms (Adaptive Moment Estimation, Stochastic Gradient Descent, Sign Stochastic Gradient Descent, and Root Mean Square Propagation) were tested and evaluated at differing learning rates.
This study shows that innovative transfer learning methods, which integrate both unsupervised and supervised techniques with spectroscopic data pre-processing (ATR correction, normalization, smoothing) and present significant benefits. Their effectiveness in training AI systems on limited, imbalanced datasets is particularly notable.
The strategic deployment of CAEs, complemented by data augmentation and synthetic sample generation using the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) and class weights, effectively address the challenges posed by such datasets.
The robustness and adaptability of our DCNN models are discussed, emphasizing their reliability and portability for real-world applications. Beyond their primary forensic utility, these systems demonstrate versatility, making them suitable for broader computer vision tasks, notably image classification and object detection.

We are presenting a convolutional neural network (CNN) application recognizing the class identity of synthetic cannabinoids based on their Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectra.
The results indicate that this CNN system can be efficiently used to distinguish JWH synthetic cannabinoids from other substances of forensic interest, but also from other types of synthetic cannabinoids. One of the main advantages of the system is that it can also operate on mobile ATR-FTIR spectrometers used in field operations.

# Abstract:
This paper presents the alternative training strategies we tested for an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) designed to detect JWH synthetic cannabinoids.
In order to increase the model performance in terms of output sensitivity, we used the Neural Designer data science and machine learning platform combined with the programming language Python. We performed a comparative analysis of several optimization algorithms, error parameters and regularization methods. Finally, we performed a new goodness-of-fit analysis between the testing samples in the data set and the corresponding ANN outputs in order to investigate their sensitivity.
The effectiveness of the new methods combined with the optimization algorithms is discussed.

# Abstract:
We are presenting the results obtained by computing different toxicity indices for some of the newest JWH synthetic cannabinoids, by using (Q)SAR models, ADME(T) predictions, simulations of NMR spectral techniques and other different computational dedicated software packages and forensic analytical tools.
We have examined the main physical and chemical properties and evaluated the behavioral neurotoxicity and pharmacokinetic profile of 16 aminoalkylindole class-derived synthetic cannabinoids JWH as compared to the Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), which was chosen as a standard compound. For this purpose, the geometries of the molecules have been optimized by using the AM1 semi-empirical quantum method.
The conclusions of a comparative analysis of the toxicities of synthetic and natural cannabinoids are presented.

#Abstract:
This study evaluates the impact of the dataset size and of the number of molecular descriptors selected to build Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) screening for JWH synthetic cannabinoids.
The aim is to determine how to most economically use the available data on these illicit drugs and still avoid overfitting. The results indicate a proportional decrease in the number of inputs in terms of memory requirements, processing speed, and numerical precision by fitting a models with the same database of designer drugs and the same test set for each different sized training dataset (having 25, 50, and 100 samples respectively). They also suggest that the models can be trained very well with 150 and well with 100 samples. Quite modest improvements are recorded for 50 and 25 samples.

# Abstract:
During the last decade, a growing prevalence of new psychoactive substances (NPS) has been noticed by the law enforcement agencies. Although NPS have no medical use due to their very high toxicity, they are often sold on the black market.
NBOMe defines a group of toxic amphetamines that has as parent compound 25I-NBOMe, a synthetic derivative of 2C-I (2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenetylamine). In this paper, we are presenting a series of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) designed to identify the NBOMe class membership based on a mixture of topological and 3D-MoRSE descriptors.
For this purpose, the molecular structures of 160 compounds representing NBOMe compounds, narcotics, sympathomimetic amines, potent analgesics, as well as their main precursors have been first optimized.
Then a molecular database was formed by computing a large number of topological and 3D-MoRSE descriptors that characterize these structures. This database was used as input for building an ANN system designed to recognize NBOMes.
The relevance of the input variables on its classification performance has been assessed and new systems have been built by using different combinations of selected topological and 3D-MoRSE descriptors. The best performing system has been found by comparing various classification efficiency criteria.

Neural networks were developed to simulate the human nervous system for Machine Learning tasks by treating the computational units in a learning model in a manner similar to human neurons. The grand vision of neural networks is to create artificial intelligence by building machines whose architecture simulates the computations in the human nervous system. Although the biological model of neural networks is an exciting one and evokes comparisons with science fiction, neural networks have a much simpler and mundane mathematical basis than a complex biological system. The neural network abstraction can be viewed as a modular approach of enabling learning algorithms that are based on continuous optimization on a computational graph of mathematical dependencies between the input and output. These ideas are strikingly similar to classical optimization methods in control theory, which historically preceded the development of neural network algorithms.
Neural networks were developed soon after the advent of computers in the fifties and sixties. Rosenblatt’s perceptron algorithm was seen as a fundamental cornerstone of neural networks, which caused an initial period of euphoria — it was soon followed by disappointment as the initial successes were somewhat limited. Eventually, at the turn of the century, greater data availability and increasing computational power lead to increased successes of neural networks, and this area was reborn under the new label of “Deep Learning.” Although we are still far from the day that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is close to human performance, there are specific domains like image recognition, self-driving cars, and game playing, where AI has matched or exceeded human performance. It is also hard to predict what AI might be able to do in the future. For example, few computer vision experts would have thought two decades ago that any automated system could ever perform an intuitive task like categorizing an image more accurately than a human. The large amounts of data available in recent years together with increased computational power have enabled experimentation with more sophisticated and deep neural architectures than was previously possible. The resulting success has changed the broader perception of the potential of Deep Learning. This book discusses neural networks from this modern perspective.
The chapters of the book are organized as follows:
1. The basics of neural networks: Chapters 1, 2, and 3 discuss the basics of neural network design and the backpropagation algorithm. Many traditional machine learning models can be understood as special cases of neural learning. Understanding the relationship between traditional machine learning and neural networks is the first step to understanding the latter. The simulation of various machine learning models with neural networks is provided in Chapter 3. This will give the analyst a feel of how neural networks push the envelope of traditional machine learning algorithms.
2. Fundamentals of neural networks: Although Chapters 1, 2, and 3 provide an overview of the training methods for neural networks, a more detailed understanding of the training challenges is provided in Chapters 4 and 5. După terminarea liceului (1940), a absolvit Facultatea de Istorie – avându-i printre profesori pe Aurelian Sacerdoţeanu.
A devenit istoric şi heraldist, specialist în vexilologie (studiul steagurilor ţării).
A avut o însemnată contribuţie în cunoaşterea istoriei Tricolorului naţional, a stemelor provinciilor româneşti, a diferitelor emisii monetare de pe teritoriul ţării noastre.

He had a significant contribution in knowing the history of the national Tricolor, of the coats of arms of the Romanian provinces, of the different monetary issues on the territory of our country.

Elaborat în conformitate cu noile principii, conturate în monografia cercetătorului american de origine română Mihai Vinereanu, Originea traco-dacă a limbii române, Chişinău, Pontos, 2002, dicţionarul pe care îl recenzăm, Dicţionar etimologic al limbii române pe baza cercetărilor de indo-europenistică, Bucureşti, Editura Alcor Edimpex, 2008, 935 p., aduce mult aşteptatele argumente lingvistice, suprapuse celor istorice şi arheologice, în favoarea originii traco-dace a poporului şi a limbii române.
Potrivit calculelor pe care le-a efectuat autorul, „dicţionarul... cuprinde aproximativ 5.000 de cuvinte-titlu provenite din fondul vechi sau tradiţional şi cca 1.000 de neologisme. Fără a lua în consideraţie neologismele..., elementele comune cu latina nu depăşesc 13%, cele slave reprezintă cam 8%, cele turceşti – 4,5%, greceşti – 3%, maghiare – 1,5% şi germane – 1%”; „cca 280 de cuvinte sunt de origine onomatopeică sau imitativă şi constituie 6%”; „cca 58% reprezintă fondul prelatin sau traco-dac al limbii române”. Dicţionarul demonstrează că aceste elemente lexicale provin din proto-indo-europeană [PIE] prin traco-dacă.
La acest fond se poate adăuga şi majoritatea elementelor lexicale de natură imitativă cu o vechime considerabilă, care au echivalente în multe alte limbi indo-europene. Astfel, „multe dintre cuvintele rămase cu origine incertă provin, probabil, din acelaşi fond prelatin, aşa încât fondul autohton ar ajunge la cca 65%” (p. 10).
În Argument-ul dicţionarului (p. 9-51), autorul evidenţiază trei ipoteze cu privire la originea limbii române: „1. origine latină, cu aproape 20% elemente latine şi peste 80% împrumuturi; 2. origine latină, cu foarte multe elemente traco-dace, dar şi slave” (cf. Aurel Berinde, Simion Lugojan, Contribuţii la cunoaşterea limbii dacilor, Timişoara, Editura Facla, 1984, care atribuie 700 de cuvinte moştenirii autohtone în limba română [p. 90]); „3. origine traco-dacă cu influenţă latină, slavă şi de altă natură” (p. 11).
Analizându-le, M. Vinereanu conchide: „Prima ipoteză este cea clasică, devenită doctrină oficială în cultura română de peste 150 de ani, care tinde să fie luată ca un fel de dogmă religioasă.
Dar această ipoteză nu rezistă unui examen riguros. Dacă limba română ar avea peste 80% elemente de împrumut, ar fi existat influenţe foarte puternice nu numai la nivel lexical, ci şi morfologic şi sintactic. Acest lucru ar fi produs o creolizare a limbii române, cu pierderea totală sau aproape totală a flexiunii morfologice, aşa cum se întâmplă în asemenea situaţii.
Cazul cel mai cunoscut este cel al limbii engleze care, la nivel lexical, este un amestec (în proporţii sensibil egale) de elemente anglo-saxone şi franceze (sau latine). Prin urmare, această ipoteză nu poate fi acceptată pentru limba română, întrucât aceasta are o morfologie foarte bogată, atât la declinarea substantivelor, cât, mai ales, la conjugarea verbelor” (p. 11).
Din aceleaşi considerente e respinsă cea de-a doua ipoteză şi acceptată ultima, menţionându-se faptul că „asemănările cu latina provin, în mare parte, din fondul comun traco-italo-celtic”. Influenţele „au avut loc mai ales la nivel lexical, fără efecte considerabile asupra structurii morfosintactice a limbii.
La nivel morfologic, asemănările cu latina nu afectează ipoteza în cauză, întrucât acelaşi gen de corespondenţe le regăsim în greacă, sanscrită, în limbile baltice şi chiar în cele slave, limbi indo-europene, care au, de asemenea, o morfologie bogată” (p. 11-12).
„În acest caz, elementele cu adevărat latine reprezintă, în cea mai mare parte, lexicul legat de biserica creştină, precum şi de o serie de elemente generate de civilizaţie. Prin urmare, multe din elementele aşa-zis latine nu sunt, de fapt, de origine latină, ci reprezintă un fond comun. În marea lor majoritate, acestea sunt cuvinte care nu se împrumută de la o limbă la alta, printre care se includ şi cele din categoriile gramaticale închise cum sunt prepoziţiile, conjuncţiile şi adverbele.
În acest caz, elementele traco-dace din limba română depăşesc 70% din lexicul tradiţional” (p. 12).
În concluzie, autorul notează: „Putem estima că elementele autohtone, calculate în virtutea celei de-a treia ipoteze enunţate mai sus, se ridică la peste 84-85% dintr-un total de 25.000 de cuvinte, dacă se iau în calcul şi derivaţii” (p. 12).
Mărturia numeroaselor limbi indo-europene analizate cu acribia şi responsabilitatea unui cercetător pătruns de importanţa operei sale, îi permite autorului să dezavueze aserţiunea filozofului şi teologului Sfântul Augustin (354-430): Ut somniorum interpretatio, ita verborum orīgo pro cuiusque ingenio iudicatur „Explicarea originii cuvintelor, ca şi interpretarea viselor, se face după cum îl taie capul pe fiecare”.
Astfel, dovada faptului că rom. apă nu e reflexul lat. aqua, ci vine din traco-dacă, e prezenţa echivalentului fonosemantic apa în sanscrită; la fel rom. gol „lipsit de conţinut”, „dezbrăcat” nu e un împrumut din v. sl. golŭ, ci provine din proto-indo-europeană [PIE] – cf. arm. kalad „gaură, vizuină”; gr. goleos „gaură, groapă”; lituan. guolis „gaură, vizuină”, lett. guol’a „cuib, vizuină”, eng. holow „gol, găunos” etc.
Un argument în plus cu referire la cel din urmă exemplu aduce factorul semantic, a cărui motivare o găsim în monografia semnată de acelaşi autor: „Nu este posibil ca româna să-l fi luat din slavă, deoarece slavele nu au decât sensul de kahl, nackt „chel, dezbrăcat”, nu şi „gol pe dinăuntru”.
Acest al doilea sens este sensul primar şi în limba română, deoarece pentru primul sens comun cu slavele există destule sinonime ca: dezbrăcat, dezvelit etc., pe când pentru „gol pe dinăuntru” nu avem alternative, de la acest sens derivă şi verbul a goli. Este posibil ca ambele sensuri să fi existat în PIE şi numai româna să le fi păstrat pe amândouă, în slave păstrându-se doar sensul secundar, iar în celelalte limbi sensul primar” (p. 167).
Din păcate, înregistrăm frecvente derogări (parţiale) de la criteriul în discuţie, fapt ce-i minimalizează eficienţa (lână, a lega, lut, măsură, mână, a miji, mărunt, minte, a mulge, nară, nas, a pluti, purice, a răpi, a purta, rod, sânge, scump, sfânt, slab, slut, soartă, spumă, topor, ţesală, a umbla, uliţă, undă, a unge, vadră, vas, vârf, viu, vraf, zvon etc.).
Uneori (ce-i drept foarte rar), autorul uită să argumenteze cu date lingvistice indo-europene. E cazul lui a socoti, la care nu se aplică criteriul preconizat de etimologizare.
Adesea în sprijinul argumentelor de ordin strict lingvistic autorul aduce dovezi istorice, arheologice, mitologice, logice, bibliografice etc., oferind cititorului adevărate micromonografii erudite.
Semnalăm câteva dintre acestea: crai, Craiova, cumătru, cumpănă, a face, gard, ghem, glugă, gospodar, ham, a îmbrăca, a încărca, a întărâta, jos, jupân, labă, lan, leac, lună, lup, matcă, noapte, oraş, oţet, păgân, plug, proaspăt, român, a rumega, rus „roşu”, Rusalii, Sargeţia (Strei), scară, secure, scaun, soră, stivă, stuf, strugure, sută, a tălmăci, valah, zeu.
Provoacă nedumerire unele articole care lasă la discreţia cititorului opţiunea pentru filiera ce leagă lexemul românesc de sursa PIE. De exemplu, rom. a cânta e raportabil la PIE prin mijlocirea unui etimon latin sau autohton? Dacă e latin, de ce se renunţă la criteriul enunţat anterior, dacă e autohton, de ce lipseşte menţiunea expresă obişnuită în astfel de situaţii?
Incertitudini similare apar şi la articolele: coastă, culme, îngust, a înota, a întreba, jale „mâhnire”, lat, pârleaz, perete, pleşuv, a seca „a secera”, slavă, smoală, socól, a suna, şiş „cuţit”, tocmai etc.
Cea mai serioasă lacună a merituosului dicţionar etimologic semnat de dr. M. Vinereanu este determinată de ignorarea (unilaterală) a factorului intern de etimologizare. Dacă latura de suprafaţă a acestui factor e, în majoritatea cazurilor*, corect sesizată (a (se) sminti <s- + minte, a smulge <s- + mulge, sprânceană <spre + geană, a spulbera <s- + pulbere, a scăpăta <scăpa, a scurge <s- + curge, secetă <sec + suf. -et., cf. Al. In the summer of 2020, China and India came near to war. The nuclear-armed adversaries both massed troops and equipment along their disputed border in eastern Ladakh. Sectcentric narratives and victimhood were a mere tool for what was a geopolitical confrontation, and Hezbollah’s involvement launched it to becoming a regional ANSA. The book outlines that this transition was only plausible because of the interplay between three factors: Hezbollah’s sectarian mobilization and instrumentalization of its sectarian identity; the shift into a quasi-army combining classical with guerrilla tactics and formations; and its embedding as a partner in the axis which now extends from Beirut to Tehran. It was in 2018 that a set of conditions, impossible to reproduce, allowed Hezbollah to reach its culmination on both the domestic and regional theatres.
