Tine Vekemans
Tine graduated from the M.A. program Indian Languages and Cultures of Ghent University magna cum laude in 2007, and spent a further year expanding her knowledge of contemporary India, international politics and globalization in the Master-program Conflict and Development. After graduating, Tine worked in the migration-sector, as a translator, and as an intercultural advisor.
In 2013, she started her PhD-research into the development of South-Asian migrant-communities, the effect of migration on cultural identity and religion, and the role of new media in these processes. The case she researches is the Jain-diaspora. In 2019, she obtained a grant from FWO (Flanders Research Foundation) to start a new, post-doctoral research project. This project deals with Jain migration history and the impact of migration history on the lived experiences of diasporic Jains today. Since September 2022, she is also appointed as a professor on the Acharya Mahapragya chair for Jain Studies at Ghent University.
