Isaac O Albert
Educational Background
Born on August 5, 1959, Albert is a Professor of African History, Peace and Conflict Studies and the pioneer Dean, Faculty of Multidisciplinary Studies, University of Ibadan. He is also the Co-Chair of the National Think Tank for Translating Research to Innovations, Strategies and Evidence for Policies, established by the University of Ibadan Research Foundation. He obtained his PhD degree in African History from the University of Ibadan in 1994 and did a Certificate course in peacekeeping and conflict resolution at the UN International Leadership Academy (Amman, Jordan) in 1999. Albert was a two time (1991 and 1994) winner of the (MA and PhD) Thesis Writing Fellowship of the Council for the Development of Economic and Social Research in Africa (CODESRIA), Dakar. He trained in peace processes in the UK, USA, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Finland, Israel, Palestine, Egypt, Algeria, South Africa and other parts of Africa.
He was the convener of the 2008 Extended Workshop on Social History jointly sponsored by SEPHIS (Netherlands) and the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) on “Historicizing Migration”, St. Louis, Senegal, 3-21 March 2008. This project involved scholars from different parts of Africa, Asia, Caribbean and Latin America. In 2006, he won the Africa Peace Education Prize of the California State University, Sacramento (USA). He was also awarded the Peace Education Prize of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre in Accra Ghana on July 5, 2013. He is a consultant to several international development agencies including UNCHS (Habitat), UNEAD, UNICEF, USAID, USAID/OTI, DFID, Oxfam, IDASA, US-African Command, Humanitarian Dialogue (HD), and the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, Accra, Ghana to name just a few.
He served as the Regional Board Chairman of the West African Network for Peace building (Accra, Ghana) from February 2015 to February 2017. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators; Fellow, Institute of Corporate Administration (ICA) and an Associate Member of the Finnish Folklore fellows (Helsinki) instituted by the Finnish Academy of Letters. He became a Member, West Africa Body of Peace Fellows, Accra, Ghana in 2019. He is a Full Member of the Chatham House London (113597).
Prof. Albert delivered the 2017 Kofi Annan – Dag Hammarskjöld lecture at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre in Accra, Ghana on Regional Engagement in Peacebuilding in Africa: Perspectives and Challenges. He gave the keynote address to the Chatham House/West Africa Peace and Security Network (WAPSN) Seminar on “Sahelian Security in Flux” on May 13, 2019 in London. He spoke on Scoping the Security Crisis in the Sahel. On March 2, 2020 he gave the keynote address to the University Ibadan/University of Portsmouth Workshop on “Peace, Security and Conflict in West Africa and the Sahel” in Portsmouth, UK. His lecture was titled Agenda 2063 and the Mantra of African Solutions to African Problems. Albert has published extensively on issues relating to peace and security in Africa. A prolific writer, Albert has published 35 well-cited books, 47 journal articles, over 100 chapters in books, 8 security studies anecdotes, 16 monographs and 5 technical reports (see Google Scholars). His latest book, titled Urbanism and Crisis Management in Africa, was published in 2019 by the Pan African University Press in Texas, USA.
