Kareem Rabie is Associate Professor of Anthropology at The University of Illinois, Chicago. His work focuses on privatization, urban development, and the state-building project in the West Bank.

Previously he was Assistant Professor of Anthropology at American University in Washington, DC; visiting fellow at CUNY’s Center for Place, Culture, and Politics and Committee on Globalization and Social Change; Harper-Schmidt Fellow at the University of Chicago; and Marie Curie Fellow/Senior Researcher at the University of Oxford Centre on Migration, Policy, and Society (COMPAS).

His current research on Palestine and China has been supported by the ACLS, the Wenner-Gren Foundation, the Graham Foundation for Advancement in the Fine Arts, UIC, and others.

THE CONFLICT SHORELINE: COLONIZATION AS CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE NEGEV DESERTNear the beginning of T... more THE CONFLICT SHORELINE: COLONIZATION AS CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE NEGEV DESERTNear the beginning of The Conflict Shoreline, a new collaboration between architect and theorist Eyal Weizman and photographer Fazal Sheikh, Weizman states, "The threshold of the desert is an elusive demarcation" (9). Physical scientists, social scientists, lawyers, the State of Israel, colonial explorers, and inhabitants have defined the northern boundary of the Negev desert in multiple ways. This shifting boundary divides landscapes defined by aridity and fertility, and in doing so it marks legal boundaries, styles of life, rights, and property. Drawn from ethnographic fieldwork and documentary research, this article examines three shifts in... more Drawn from ethnographic fieldwork and documentary research, this article examines three shifts in national-scale planning in Palestine. In the period after the Oslo accords, Palestinian planners were tasked with the responsibility to create formal structures of governance and build for a future, eventual state there. Through that process and especially after the second intifada, national planning came to focus almost exclusively on market openness, privatization, and capitalistic development as part of a state and economy building project. Increasingly since 2015, planners have attempted to re-take some kind of formal authority. This article argues that such regimes show how Palestine is increasingly crafted at the state-scale as a node in wider global political economies in order to ostensibly stabilize the political situation, and in ways that have wide consequences for Palestine.
