About us

Our now-iconic footwear started when the first air-cushioned sole technology was designed by two German inventors: medical doctor, Dr. Klaus Maertens and engineer Herbert Funck. But while our sole technology may be German, our soul is undeniably British. British shoe-makers, R Griggs and Co, bought the rights to that air-cushioned sole technology. R Griggs & Co anglicised the name to “Dr. Martens”, designed an outsole and boot for British workers and the 1460 boot was born. Dr. Martens footwear was designed to look new with its modern air-cushion comfort so R Griggs & Co added the iconic yellow stitch, the grooves, the two tone side sole and the black and yellow heel loop. These new boots were sold to workmen. But fate intervened. Dr. Martens may have been made for industry but, as it turns out, they were destined for the stage. Subverted early on by subcultures, they paved the way for a new kind of rebellious self-expression. From the punks of 70s London to the grungers of 90s Seattle, Dr. Martens boots have always stood with those who dare to be different. Subcultures may fade out and evolve but our alternative spirit is a constant. And as for what the future holds? We have offices in London, Northampton, Paris, Düsseldorf, Portland, across Asia and an ever-expanding global retail portfolio. We have the respect of big-name fashion giants – think Supreme and Yohji Yamamoto – enabling us to engage in exciting partnerships season after season. We want to mean something to everyone who laces up our boots: from the first-timers to the Docs boots veterans. Do you have what it takes to help us? We need ambitious, passionate, people – with rebel fire in their hearts.

As the number 1 boots brand on the planet, we are passionate about providing our people with the tools to thrive in their role and build their career with us. That’s why we recently launched The DM Way, our new global behavioural framework that articulates how we can be successful in our roles at Dr. Martens.   The DM Way is comprised of 8 SUCCESS FACTORS, providing our people with greater clarity on growth and career development opportunities.     With 200 of our people involved in the design, it’s been a joy to see even more team members from all over the globe bringing the framework to life. Here you can see pictures from a selection of events and workshops where our people had the opportunity to identify their strengths and development opportunities and plan the actions they will take to develop themselves.    #THEDMWAY #DEVELOP #LEAD #CONNECT #INFLUENCE #EXPLORE #INVENT #DRIVE #ORGANISE

The Dr. Martens Foundation are proud to have supported The BRIT School in bringing their Global Majority Show to the stage this year. Established in 2020, this annual event gives BRIT students a dedicated space to celebrate the resilience and achievements of African, Asian, Indigenous and Latin American communities. Drawing on this year's theme of Geography and the support of their mentors, students came together to create 11 unique pieces of physical theatre, dance, music, theatre, spoken word and poetry. Each performance brought to life gripping stories, bold statements, the undeniable talent of these rising stars - and roars of applause! We set up the Dr. Martens Foundation as an independent charity in 2021 to end social injustice - a mission rooted in everything the Doc's community stands for. The Foundation and The BRIT School are working together to break down barriers that block young people from accessing creative industries and using art to make a stand. This is just one of the initiatives driving this forward. Congratulations to the BRIT students and team for creating such a powerful showcase. #lifeatdrmartens #drmartens #drmartensfoundation

As we step into May, we’re reflecting on what an amazing April we’ve had here at Dr. Martens HQ. The 1st April marked the 64th Birthday of our iconic 1460 Boot – and we celebrated as only DMs can! Our amazing Archivist Ramona R. took us on the Boot’s 64-year journey from humble beginnings to where we are now in a Global webinar; our people in the UK, Americas and APAC shared their unique stories of how their favourite pair of boots got them to where they are now and of course it wouldn’t be a Birthday without cake! All of our people across the globe from Retail, our Regional offices as well as our Factory and DC teams had the opportunity to come together (wearing 1460 boots of course!) to share stories, cake and connect over our Brand’s amazing heritage. A special thanks to both our DM Foundation Partner Luminary Bakery in Camden and The Copper Kitchen Ltd in Northampton, UK for providing us incredible bespoke cakes to mark the occasion! Camden Photography by Eeva Rinne. Follow our LinkedIn page for more updates about #LifeatDrMartens.   Want to be part of our 65th anniversary? Check out our open roles now!

Celebrating our iconic people 🎉 Last month, our EMEA region hosted their first ever 'Rebel Soles' awards ceremony which gave all team members the chance to nominate their colleagues, sing each others praises, and let the wider business know about some of the achievements our EMEA colleagues made in FY24. We had an amazing turn out both in person in our Hawley Crescent office in Camden, and digitally, where our EU offices all came together to dial in and celebrate.   There were so many nominations, and it was extremely hard for our Regional Leadership Team to choose finalists for all of the awards. We’re fortunate enough to have a vast amount of dedicated, hardworking people who embody all our company values here at DM’s, but choose they did, and you can see some pictures below of the finalists and overall winners for each category.   This is the first time we’ve hosted an awards ceremony like this, but it definitely won’t be the last, and we can’t thank Hayley Reed (Head of Sales – North EMEA) enough as she was the champion of this initiative and really got it off the ground. Please see below a full list of winners for each category, with the overall prize of “Icon of the Year” going to the wonderful Sophie Rhind (Category Manager EMEA).   Championing our values: Show You Care - Winner: Hannah Halley Championing our values: Act Courageously - Winner: Tanja de Wolf Championing our values: Be Yourself - Winner: Charlotte Kent Celebrating ideas and innovation: Best Foot Forward - Winner: Salome Cruz Carvalho Championing culture & community: Life & Sole - Winner: Madeline Lowe Team player of the year: Player’s Player - Winner: Alba Rita C. For going the extra mile: Hell For Leather - Winner: Kelvin Aryee Outstanding performance in a support function: Unsung Hero - Winner: Roberto Scala Championing Collaboration: Yellow Stitch - Winner: Amy Rodrigues MCICM The ultimate prize EMEA’s FY24: Icon Of The Year - Winner: Sophie Rhind
