The purpose of introducing the process management (PM) as a technique was to incorporate the collaboration between academic research with ongoing activities of local authorities, and furthermore to preserve living and dwelling patterns to make them sustain within the neighborhood in time. Design/methodology/approach PM is a method of approaching planning that can be used in complex, unpredictable situations common in the field of development and social change. The method allows stakeholders to pursue different goals or activities within a common project. Under such circumstances, the planning process must respond to many interests as a key aspect of the public interest of a particular community. This concept helps planners by antic...

The network was structured into three sub-networks which became interwoven through the project activities: HOUSING RESEARCH was dedicated to identifying relevant research topics in the current debate about housing in a globalized world. COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION aimed at engaging local stakeholders in community action projects to address the planning and renovation of the built environment at various scales, from residential to public. PEDAGOGICAL ACTIVITIES was devoted to the collaborative design and implementation of learning activities to study contemporary housing issues

Data mining provides opportunities and knowledge embedded in the urban structure, which complement and extend the data previously obtained with other approaches. A case study is in place to investigate the modeling and predictive capabilities of the tool. A number of simulations have revealed distinctive local patterns of urban change in the city of Skopje, shaped by local urban spatial and institutional structures. This study shows the possibilities of intelligent technologies in the interpretation of the historical evidence of urban development and better understanding of the urban phenomenon. 1.

Use of algorithms for generation of virtual entities that will develop its functional and formal properties within the non-linear process of adaptation of complex system is a foundation for new point of view in understanding architecture and urban environment. This paper describes parametric approach in architectural design through elaboration of shift in paradigms in architecture that has brought to the idea of use of parametric modeling with emphasis on two different groups of parametric software and presents the possibilities of generative algorithms in modeling architectural form and development of cities and urban design.

Skopje’s historic district is an example of social and spatial mixture of shapes, programs, cultures, practices and people. Programs for preservation of the historic district in Skopje have led to a separation and isolation through fixing in time the physical structure of the city. This approach does not recognize the distinctive qualities of the place and petrifies the otherwise dynamic phenomena of the city. Through series of case studies that introduce the urban dialog between typologies, programs, spatial and functional configurations and dwelling within the historic district of the city, the study explores a series of architectural tools that

The phenomenon of transition was intensified and accelerated by the influences of a liberal market economy and new information technologies alongside socio‐cultural developments, such as consumption and mass‐media becoming an omnipotent machine for production and management. As a consequence the mode of transition was inevitably transferred into the city. Due to the socio‐political shift the urban transition is particularly recognizable in cities in developing countries such as Macedonia. In this manner the city of Skopje represents a valuable and potent resource in the field of urban research. This paper points to spatial urban voids as a tool for restructuring and reinventing a new operational coherence for cities in transition. The concept of the urban void emerges as a creative strategy that sees the 'empty' space as spat...

The paper presents new trends in the field of CIM (City Information Modeling), and points to the complexity of problems of planning as seen from the perspective of town planning, indicating the necessity to introduce and visualize the semantic context in 3D modeling at the urban structure level

InViTo is a research project based on the combined use of Excel, Google Earth and Grasshopper, a free plug-in for McNeel’s Rhinoceros, which allows to work with databases in a parametric and interactive environment. Since Grasshopper can use mathematical functions to transform 3D data, it can reproduce the behaviour of simulation tools, allowing users to completely customize models, functions and tasks. Through the real-time generation of three-dimensional volumes directly from datasheets, InViTo produces visualizations of urban and regional areas, which can be displayed also in Google Earth virtual globe. Thanks to its interactive properties, it aims to avoid “black box” simulations and to explain cause-effect relations occurring in urban dynamics, so that it is particularly indicated for enabling discussion and information sharing in participative and collaborative processes.

The project has enriched the sense of identity and mutual understanding between European citizens by bringing upfront problems and issues of urban life that are shared among them, but also by sharing common values, history and culture in an open dialog. The network organized two seminars as a platform for creative and open debate between local authorities, academics, experts, civil activists and citizens from local communities about the problem of social integration in ever-growing cities. The SINERGI Book One: "The Projects for an Inclusive City" is the result of these two seminars. The purpose of this book is to provoke decision-makers and citize...

The comparison between Turin and Skopje aims to highlight the possible role of the urban design tools and planning (especially diachronic visioning), in the future of a sustainable growth of the urban European systems. The strategies of visioning of the urban plans require, to become effective, a strong liability coming from the political power and the economic feasibility: how can we consider the production of plans when this liability is going to lack? The crisis of the building sector in recent years along Europe has underlined some weaknesses of this approach to plans which had been a good instrument in a perspective of economic and physical growth. This paper assumes that the urban plan will continue to be a fundamental instrument for managing the fu...
