À l’instar de Werner Sombart, mais selon une perspective théorique fort différente, Weber s’est employé à analyser le nouveau rapport moral des individus à leur travail dans le contexte de l’essor du capitalisme. Afin de comprendre la vision du monde de l’« individu historique » porteur de l’esprit du capitalisme, Weber a plus spécifiquement circonscrit une « éthique » particulière du travail – l’éthique protestante – et montré ses « affinités électives » avec l’esprit du capitalisme. Par la suite, plusieurs autres recherches ont aussi emprunté une voie similaire, qui consiste à repérer des formes dominantes d’ethos propres à certaines périodes historiques.

Ces transformations necessitent de revoir, de critiquer et d'actualiser les principaux concepts a partir desquels la sociologie analyse le monde du travail. Dans cet ouvrage, les concepts revisites sont les suivants : salariat, precarite, informalite, conflit, controle et organisation du travail, qualification et competence, rapport au travail, parcours professionnel, insertion professionnelle, temporalites. Chacun des concepts retenus est analyse selon une perspective critique, qui consiste a remettre en question les assises theoriques et empiriques de ceux-ci, et une perspective analytique, qui vise a arrimer ces concepts fondamentaux aux nouvelles realites du monde du travail.

Pourquoi une telle attitude ? Je vois trois grandes raisons à cela. D’abord, la population active en Amérique du Nord ne se fait plus d’illusions : elle considère que la croissance continue est chose du passé ; les récessions successives et l’incertitude professionnelle, choses du présent. L’horizon est sombre. En un mot vous dira un salarié : « Les belles années sont derrière nous. » Le beau rêve d’une société des loisirs est aussi chose du passé. En fait, tout le monde se rend à l’évidence : la société des loisirs soutenue par les révolutions techniques fut une belle utopie.

S’invitant dans un rapport de domination au travail représenté traditionnellement par une dyade employeur-employé, le client s’avère désormais un concept central pour rendre compte des transformations contemporaines du travail. Les recherches dans le domaine montrent que la figure du client contemporain est de plus en plus associée à une position de pouvoir : toujours roi, le client défend aussi ses intérêts. Parmi les nouvelles figures qui semblent émerger se trouve celle du client « virtuel ». Hyper-connecté, il publie sous le regard du monde entier des éloges ou des plaintes sur Internet. Ainsi, même si le client est depuis longtemps une priorité dans le secteur des services, l’arrivée de ce client virtuel revêt une signification nouvelle pour les organisations qui risquent maintenant à tout moment d’être lynchées sur la place publique et de voir leur e-réputation atteinte. Notre communication explorera les effets de l’arrivée de ce client virtuel sur les employés de première ligne. Pour ce faire, nous avons réalisé des entretiens semi-dirigés auprès de travailleurs de la restauration, soit un secteur qui est parmi les premiers à faire l’objet d’évaluations sur Internet (e.g. Trip Advisor). Les résultats de cette enquête exploratoire seront confrontés à un certain nombre de recherches récentes dans le domaine.
