Abstract The reflection, based on a work developed with students in architecture, introduces a proposition of research on a little studied aspect of the work of French town planner Michel Ecochard, active as Director of the Service of Town planning and Architecture under the French Protectorate in Morocco, after the Second World War (Cohen and Eleb on 1998, Avermaete on 2005): it regards Ecochard's work in Kenitra, and more specifically in the popular districts of this city. The "temporal thickness " which characterizes the urban reality of these districts allows to bring to light the potential of appropriation by the inhabitants and users (Navez-Bouchanine, 1993) of projects based on the so-called « tabula rasa » town planning-and thus re-sizing the criticisms developed against this town planning (Blain, 2006)-as well as the relevance of certain propositions of Michel Ecochard and his co-workers, in particular in relationship to open spaces.
