Their representations and the focus on social constructionism and gender will be examples of why gender equality is needed. The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and the film, The Handmaiden (2016) dir, by Park Chan-Wook, represent its female characters as victims of their patriarchal society and their attempts to evade it. This essay will investigate particular reasons why feminism is needed; such as gender essentialism, the patriarchy’s impact on women, and the descent into madness.
