The poem “Why do you throw a pebble...” (“Orpheus, Eugene and Me”) holds significant importance in comprehending the literary and biographical dialogue between Vladimir Narbut and Osip Mandelstam. In our work, we focus on identifying textual variants of the poem, the historical and biographical context, and the poetics of this piece.

Despite the short-term existence of Acmeism as a formal association, this literary movement retained its principles of poetics, influence on literature and, more broadly, culture for a long time. Friendship, private relationships, deep affection or equally deep hostility, made the Acmeists “lyceum fellows” of the early twentieth century. In our research’s initial segment, we analyse the biographical and literary components that constitute the lifelong dialogue between the two renowned Acmeist poets, Vladimir Narbut and Osip Mandelstam. This study aims to shed light on the intricate nature of their creative exchange and its profound influence on the development of their artistic visions. By examining the intricate interplay between their personal experiences, poetic language, and aesthetic philosophy, we seek to understand their complex relationship comprehensively.

серия очерков «О Толстом», часть к-рых посвящена последним дням жизни и кончине Толстого, а также судьбе толстовского наследия; в статье «Толстой большой и Толстой маленький» Яблоновский обратился к теме личности Л. Толстого, попытавшись объяснить критические взгляды Толстого;
серия очерков-репортажей о биографии А. С. Пушкина и его потомках («Поездка в Михайловское»);

Prose” (Roman Kozhukharov, ed., Moscow, 2018) evaluates the textual criticism methods applied to this collection, reflects on the quality of the commentaries and the preface essay, and reveals a remarkable number of flaws the new edition has: the altered structure of the poetic cycles, chronological and bibliographical errors, and issues with text variants. The editor demonstrates little regard for the textual accuracy and employs a self-contradictory strategy for the versions and drafts of the poetic texts. The commentaries that supply the book lack merely a professional approach: some are too detailed (or too telegraphic), others disconnect from the context, and some are irrelevant or misguided. The latter is particularly true for Russian-Ukrainian interlingual homographs, homonyms, and ethnographic realia. The long-winded preface essay provides a detailed overview of the poet’s life and is full of debatable esoteric assumptions and preposterous conclusions.

The turn of the twentieth century was marked by a vivid interest in the literary and philosophical heritage of Gregory Skovoroda, with attempts to reassess his philosophical writings and his place within the origin of Russian philosophy. Skovoroda’s figure captured the attention of Russian philosophers Vladimir Solovyov, Vladimir Ern, Vasily Zenkovsky, and Gustav Shpet (to name a few), who laid the foundations for contemporary Skovoroda studies. The discussions of the time on Skovoroda attracted Russian Symbolists (Vladimir Solovyov, Viacheslav Ivanov, Andrei Bely), who had a keen interest in amalgamating philosophy and literature. Symbolists were fascinated by the originality of Skovoroda’s worldview and the peculiarity of his literary style, which was consonant with their era in many aspects. Another prominent figure who experienced Skovoroda’s influence was Vladimir Narbut (1888–1936), a Russian poet of Ukrainian origin and one of the six Acmeists. Narbut’s interest in the Ukrainian Baroque contributed to his “archaistic” literary penchant. He utilized Skovoroda’s works as the source of the formation of his own poetic world and as a way to reflect on self-perception and biography. Narbut’s poetics embraced Skovoroda’s Russian-Ukrainian bilingualism, unique style, pious ideas, rough ways of proving them, lighthearted comicness, and deep dramatism.

Although ‘The Carriage’ was usually viewed by Russian critiques as one of Gogolʼs minor stories, ‘The Carriage’ is tied closely to a number of themes developed by Gogolʼ in Dead Souls, The Inspector General, and his other major works. The typology of lie/deceit that is in general significant for Gogolʼ attains additional overtones in ‘The Carriage’; in this sense Chertokutskii, the protagonist of the story, parallels Chichikov, Nozdrev, and Khlestakov. The spatial structure of ‘The Carriage’ represents a special importance for the poetics of the story. The emphasized absence of any movement in the described reality of ‘The Carriage’ paradoxically contrasts multiple references to the means of conveyance in the text. The lack of any denouement focuses the story on its textual properties superimposing the authorʼs artistic worldview onto the minor anecdotic incident.

However, according to Zara Mints, it is a "complex simplicity." In this article, the author reviews understudied aspects of the semantics of the story. The analysis includes the examination of the historical tradition, the language, and the narrative technique. Particular attention is paid to how the characters are built in relation to the plot (siuzhet). The article suggests additional points for interpreting 'Tolstyi I tonkii' not merely as an "early Chekhov's humorous sketch" but also as a complex and challenging short story.

серия очерков «О Толстом», часть к-рых посвящена последним дням жизни и кончине Толстого, а также судьбе толстовского наследия; в статье «Толстой большой и Толстой маленький» Яблоновский обратился к теме личности Л. Толстого, попытавшись объяснить критические взгляды Толстого;
серия очерков-репортажей о биографии А. С. Пушкина и его потомках («Поездка в Михайловское»);
