Alex Lubet
I joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota in 1979. I trained as a composer, who specializes in performing his own works, on string instruments including acoustic guitar, National steel guitar, mountain dulcimer, electric and acoustic bass, and ukuleles of various sizes, and as a theatre artist. I have teaching appointments in Music, Bioethics, and American and Jewish Studies.
I also do research in the field of disability studies and was the first to work on music from that perspective. I've published numerous articles, including a few on disability in areas other than music, and my book, Music, Disability, and Society (Temple University Press) was the first sole-authored volume on disability studies in music, published December 17, 2010. Another specialty is the music of Bob Dylan, on which I've published a number of articles and hope to finish a book I've worked on over the years.
Teaching is important to me. I'm proud to have won both of the U of MN's highest teaching awards, for contributions to undergraduate and graduate education. Social justice is a major concern and informs all I do professionally.
