Classification analysis showed two well defined assemblages located in two contrasting environments, mid-depth (4-11 m) lagoonal patch reefs vs. deeper (10.5-20.5 m) leeward and windward fore-reef terraces. Correspondence analysis ordination (COA) yielded a more gradual transition, locating the leeward terrace intermediate between the calm lagoonal patch reefs and the ...

Their diadromous ecology and vulnerability to fishing nets have brought most populations to the brink of collapse. Conservation of the surviving populations is hindered by the paucity of historic and contemporary catch and observational records, and assessments of suitable coastal and riverine habitats. Colombia and Panama are two of 14 countries considered as a high priority for the development of species-specific national legal protection of the critically endangered largetooth sawfish (Pristis pristis). To construct a baseline for the temporal and spatial distribution of the largetooth sawfish in Colombia and Panama, we collected historical records from museum databases and from literature over the past century, analysed available small-scale fisheries landings databases, and conducted interviews with fish workers in 38 locations across both countries. We found 257 records of sawfish occurrences ...

Isla Fuerte is a partially emerged Holocenic reef-complex. The insular shelf occupies an area of about 13 km2 and, besides a highstanding island, it has diverse geomorphological features such as a seaward fringing barrier reef, a peripherical reef-belt at the outer shelf margin, and shallow patch reefs, as well as large seagrass meadows on its leeward side. On the other hand, Bushnell is a dome-shaped coral bank, about 1300 m in diameter, with a minimum depth of 12 m, located near the shelf-edge. Despite the bottom communities being relatively homogeneous and their boundaries are ill-defined, at least four ecological bottom units could be distinguished at Bushnell on the bas...

In Latin America, mangroves play an important role in traditional coastal livelihoods, but the growing economy of these nations demands the expansion of land for development, putting pressure in ecosystems such as mangroves. Here we examine the impact of land use activities on mangroves in the Gulf of Montijo, a RAMSAR site located in the Pacific coast of Panama. Spatial information of land use was analysed, ground-truthed and classified into agriculture, aquaculture and coastal development, and subsequently ranked according to estimated level of impact on mangroves based on 27 interviews with local informants. We developed a spatially-referenced cumulative impact model of human activities on mangroves. Results showed that despite the protection status of the Gulf of Montijo, its mangrove forests are affected by localised human activities, dominated by agriculture. Given the importance of ...

The taxonomic status of some of them are briefly discussed; their habitat preferences (substrates, depths) and theirdistributional patterns inthe western Atlantic are comparatively analyzed.

Based on aerial photographs from the area field surveys, maps of bottom relief, habitat units according to substrate type and cover of dominating biota, wave exposure, and patterns of wave dispersion and refraction were drawn. Employing underwater videocamera, 10 m-long transects chain were recorded and analized using the plotless method in order to characterize the sessile community structure. A total of 33 species compose the community. Of these, 14 species are stony corals, 5 zoanthids, 1 octocoral, 1 anemone, 10 macroalgae and 2 sea grasses. Ten ecological zones were identified, each of them dominated by one more species. The spatial distribution pattern of the zones is mainly controlled by substrate and wave energy. The few coral species found seemed to be particularly adapted to m...
